Just out of interest, what do married women who change their name but not their , use for ID (when a driving license won't suffice)

I got married last June and changed my passport at the same time despite it (annoyingly) only being 11 months old. I've just started a new job and my passport was one of the documents they needed in order to verify my identity etc etc etc. It wouldn't have been possible with my old passport, even if I showed my marriage certificate. Come to think of it, there have been quite a few occasions when I have needed to produce my passport as proof of identity (and name).

Ive had two new jobs since getting married and just showed them my passport. I cant think who else would ever need to see it - Ive never had to show it to anyone else.

If you think about it, you could tell your employer your name was still your maiden name anyway - I mean how would they know you had happened to have changed it on some other things and got married unless you told them?

OP you dont need to worry. When you go through US immigration your ESTA will show up on their screen, and theyll take your fingerprints and ask why you are there, where you are staying and possibly other inane stuff about what job do you or other random stuff.

They will have no idea that you have got married and changed your name on some things in the UK - after all what you call yourself is your choice, its not on some kind of official record that will show up in the US! Its just a process of you changing your name on things like credit cards, bank accounts etc. Its not like you wake up one day and become a new name! Its a gradual process so clearly people will be travelling whilst that is happening anyway.

    Have a good holiday.

Mine does (plus mine is his second middle name), and we've travelled long haul, alone, with nobody so much as raising an eyebrow.

I didn't change my name, and changed my children's name to mine after ex and I split. So despite three of us having the same name, I always got hassle at immigration in Canada and once in America. (my family live in Canada so travelled there a couple of times a year when kids were small). I had sole custody and control (as it was called then) and didn't need anyone's permission to travel, but in the end got a letter from my ex (which I could so easily have mocked up myself!) saying he was fully aware of our journey.

Maybe I look more dodgy than you, Mildred!

I haven't changed my passport either. I got married in 2010, and my passport expires in 2015.

I don't use it for business, only holidays, and have been abroad twice since I got married. Will probably go away twice again before it expires.

I don't see the big deal in keeping it in my maiden name. It doesn't bother me, so why should it bother anyone else?

Same as it doesn't bother me when women pay to have theirs changed, even if they've only held it in their maiden name for a few months.

It's just not a priority as far as I'm concerned.

Like mschocolate said, how would they know you (not 'you' as anyone in particular) were married anyway unless you told them, and even if you are married, it doesn't automatically mean you'd take your husband's name, does it?

So long as the holiday/flights are booked in the same name as your passport, that's all that matters.

Although if you apply for a job in your married name, have your bank account in your married name but then show you a passport with your maiden name for ID, I can't see how they would accept it.

I had to provide my original degree certificate for the job I've just started and as it's in my maiden name they had to have the original marriage certificate too! I guess it depends on the company and how secure they have to be?

Well they are only checking that you are eligible to work in the UK and the passport has your photo on it, so they know its you.

And I guess you could just apply for the job in your maiden name if you were really worried about it. After all your name is just what you go by - I know someone who goes by her middle name as her first name, and she is known as that at her job, bank etc, but her passport doesnt have it that way round.

You can put your pay into whatever bank account you like, so in some ways the name on that is irrelevant.

No one has ever asked me for my degree certificate either - sometimes I wish they would lol! I ordered 5 copies of my wedding certificate but so far the only place Ive had to send it to was the DVLA.
