Black screen won't re-start

I am having trouble with our laptop, which is a dell and around 3 years old.
Sometimes it will just switch off when you are in the middle of working on it. It then does an update to windows and then it won't start up again, without manual intervention by pressing F8.
Can someone help with this. Once its on, everything is fine and its superfast.
This is a windows 7 laptop

I would do a scandisk first(right click hard drrive -properties-hardware-check disk for errors...or something close to this).
then clean using cc cleaner and defrag hard drive . try these first to see if any inprovement.
also is it overheating/fan blocked (needs cleaning)Always remember that you're unique, just like everybody else:cool:0 -

Hi
Sorry, but you are chatting with a complete computer numpty. I only know how to switch the blinkin thing on and surf the net.
How do I get into scandisk, or is it something I need to download?0 -

go to my computer>select c drive (win 7) right click and follow above instructionsAlways remember that you're unique, just like everybody else:cool:0 -
I have fathomed this out, and we did this yesterday.
We think it is something to do with startup.0 -
Go into System Properties (Windows Key + Pause|Break)
Advanced > Startup & Recovery > System Failure > uncheck Automatically restart > Apply > OK
The next time Windows crashes you may see a blue screen error. Write down the stop code etc and post the details here. Disabling automatic restart will give you time to do this.0 -
Hi
