My Tom Tom is about 6 years old and has never been updated (except with free "map share corrections") - so I checked the price to update to the latest maps
£58.46 for 4 quarterly updates !!
I don't want 4 - I just want one - why would I want 4 ?

What are my options ?

That is an option but if I did - the maps on that would soon be out of date too !!
  • True but most roads don't change that much. Unless you use your Sat Nav very regularly to go places you don't know at all - 4 updates a year are unnecessary. In our house we take turns at getting new Sat Navs every two years - never had an issue with a two year old map but I refuse to pay £60+ for a new map when I can get a new one for less than that.

I like my Tom Tom - but am unwilling to pay so much for multiple updates - What is the cheapest sat nav with "free for life" updates ?

Google maps is free, has sat nav and is always up to date because the maps are stored at google rather than on the phone.

You do need a smartphone though, eg HTC Desire, iPhone etc.

Some Garmin models at the moment have an offer of lifetime map updates. I think there's on in Halfords for £140.

I've used Google Maps on my smartphone but find it has some issues with loosing satalitte signal and is sometimes a bit too slow on junctions.

do you need Europe or just UK coverage? Its showing me £39.95 for a UK & Ireland maps update.

I have been lucky enough in the past to buy a legitimate update CD that was just a year or two out of date really cheap, main thing was the activation code in the box.
European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.

It seems to be even worse at £74.95 for UK and Ireland for 12 months (4 map updates) - I DON'T WANT 4 - I JUST WANT ONE !!

it seems to me that the way the pricing works is the more up to date your tomtom is the cheaper the maps are to update again...

(the rest of what i wrote was map share connections but you already have that so have deleted... the model i have is older and doesnt have it so my update would be to get that also... making it seem more reasonable..)

I stopped using my sat nav in favour of my smart phone and google maps. have since moved from google maps to WAZE which give live traffic updates and the like from other users.

I think the downside of this method is the data usage (though i may be wrong, it's not unusual)
Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
Cos if you do it today and like it...You can do it again tomorrow.. :p
