Water Meter Mixup

Hi all,

I moved into a new flat in a block of ten last January. There are six water meters in the floor outside, none of which have ever been labelled with our plot / street number. The builder informed our water authority as to meter numbers and properties.

Yesterday I received a letter stating that the builders are visiting our properties in a week's time to 'test connection to water meters'. Essentially they think they have got the water meter numbers wrong for the flats.

Assuming that mine is wrong (I thought that my bills were very high for two professional people living in a 2 bed flat - £150 half yearly)- will I be eligible for a refund from Anglian Water? Should I ask for compensation from the builders?

Why didn't I check the meters? You may well ask - there was "an issue" between Anglian Water and the builders and the water meters in question were left in an area of the pavement that wasn't filled in for a year. They were fenced off and we had no access to them. Presumably the Anglian Water meter reader got access through the builders (who were onsite) to read the meters.

Any advice would be useful as I feel like kicking off at the builders again ;-)

£300 PA for 2 people is not particulary high - The average consumption is 60 cubic meters per person per year. So the 6 monthly bill for 2 should be 60 cu mtrs.

Almost certainly you will be being incorrectly billed for surface water drainage - check your bill - as that is the 'default' position they take on all new accounts. Make sure that you get a rebate for that if it has been charged.

I will check that out.... thank you for the info. Perhaps I was a bit optimistic then that my 'eco home' with its shower taps would mean I used less water than the same rateable amount I paid in my last property....

if you have been on the incorrect meter AW will do a check read 7 days apart and raise a bill on your average consumption you will then either get a bill for what you owe or a refund if you have paid too much.

You wont get compo from AW as it is not there fault, unfortunately on new builds the builders have a habit of tarmacing or burying meters it happens alot believe me
