An online card requires full authorisation each and every time you use it (ie, it must talk to the bank each and every time to approve the purchase).

An offline card may be used without having to communicate with the bank and may take longer to appear on your statement on a result.

do banks tell you the type on their websites?

Most banks do both. Online only or full authorisation cards are mainly issued on basic bank accounts, although there are a few banks, such as Natwest/RBS and Barclays that issue them on current accounts. With Natwest/RBS its easy to tell as the cards are different colours, and with Barclays their online card doesn't have the contactless symbol, and begins with the numbers 4658.

AFAIK with Lloyds, only their Cash Account debit card is online, although I don't bank with them so I'm not 100% on that, but that's my understanding anyway

I've just come back from gran canaria and on my monarch flight. Two people tried to pay using Lloyds cards one was green one was silver and both of them was declined. However when I used my green contactless card it worked fine.

My card is a Barclays Connect (Electronic) basically its an Electron card dressed up as something different. The two cards (on and offline) I think are the same colour - as jen said the only difference is the contactless symbol and the first four numbers (I have a personalised card with a photo on so Im not 100% if they're identical other than that)
