They just do! when you fill out your tax forms you indicate whether you are single or married - if that changes then I would think they would want to know (as it was important to them to ask).
may have something to do with some obscure allowance.........?
I've had a poke about the HMRC web site and it seems that they are only interested if one partner was born before 6 April 1935.

The expense of going to photo is less than the expense of a fine if you have to produce your licence and the details are found to be wrong.
