help? sky in my name,i owe money but my ex should pay

got sky with an ex... he put it in my name for some reason...and all money came from his account..... we split, i moved out.. never even crossed my mind a bout sky since it never affected my bank account.... got letter today from a debt collector sayin i owe sky 40quid.... its in my name so i owe it... even though its my ex who been payin it since i moved out 2years ago... he moved out of that house in june.. yet sky claim he changed his direct debit details in may.. then never paid it in october so owes from november.... yet he wasnt living in that house? i think hes cancelled his direct debit instead of cancellin sky, and therefore still incurred a charge... but its me gettin baliff letters gettin threatened with court and it affecting my credit score( which is perfect as ive never owed money in my life).... is there any help i can get for this? ive told sky he put the account in my name without my knowledge( true)... but they say this money still needs paying.... ive been in touch with his mother as i have no contact with him, and she says it was all paid up when he moved out..and he said hes paid so nothing is owed..... told him to ring sky to see where the problem is but i know he wont( hes the type to leave parking tickets for months til they increase in cost before he pays)..... oh and now apparatly cos his step sis had a word wit him, he is mad, and was going to take the money to his mams after work but now i can go to hell...... he knows i dont work.. yet he does... he owes this money not me, but i dont see why i shud have to pay it.... but it needs payin as i dont want my credit score affected... any help?? its kinda like fraud as i never gave my permission to use my name

If its in your name then you are liable for it.

He may have put the account in your name originally without you agreeing to it - but did you contact Sky when the first bill originally came through just after he set it up to explain that you hadn't given permission for this? You were it appears aware it was in your name when you lived with him.

Your credit file will already be significantly affected by this I would imagine. If he hasn't paid since November time then its very likely a default will be registered on your credit file.

Are you in a position to pay the account? Or if not are you in a position to agree a reduced payment plan. Once you have that in place you can then try to get the money out of him if he is willing to pay.

this is the first letter i have had from anyone about this... i explained situation to them and they said they would put a 15 days hold on it before it affected credit rating a think.. or i hope... if this had messed my rating up i wont be impressed at all... all my lifes ive tried hard to never owe money or be in debt and for him to mess this up for 40quid is ridiculous....
after a lot of moaning his mam has said she will pay it.. so i am hoping she will as a friend was already wanting to go down and beat the money out of him...( which i didnt condone).. his mam claims there has been no letters requesting money since he moved out of that address... if his mam pays then im happy for that...then i ring sky and cancel it completely...maybe theres a 6months resting period before they take action?? i dont know

First month a payment is missed - it will be marked as a missed payment on a credit file, second month a payment is missed - it will be marked as 2months in arrears etc.

Sometime between 3 and 6months of missed payments a default will usually be added to your credit file. Almost always this is done before the debt is passed to a debt collector.

This letter from a debt collector may be the first letter you have had recently about payments being overdue but you knew the account was in your name when you lived with him - and it is at that point you should have queried it with them or told them it was a fraudulent application.

Good that his mother has offered to pay it. But I would check your credit files to see what damage has been done.

Depends if the footprint is a default. If it is you're pretty much screwed for 6 years.

Are you sure its not satisfied default
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
