Internet Speed

I am with Talk Talk with an internet speed of up to 8MEG.
I have an internet speed monitoring program that shows mostly in the killerbite range and very occassionaly goes to 1MEG. I have had the line checked and have been told I am 8 km from the exchange. I have assumed that due to this phyicical restriction changing my supplier will alter the speed I receive very little. Is the correct? Is there anything I can do to increase the line speed? Looks like that changing my Internet supplier will do very little. So is there anything else that can be done ? maybe get a date for for the installation of fiber optic to all or part of the 8KM line length ?

Not a lot,the speed is dependant on the age of the line & also the drop run from the exchange to the master socket.

I've had problems with talktalk due to contention issues (too many people for the service and therefore it drops). I'm switching my service which neighbours have confirmed has improved things for them.

You're a very long way from the exchange. As ADSL is distance dependent being 8Km from the exchange means you'll never get the full 8Mb.

With a speed of 8mbps your line is at the most 3km from the exchange.

Whether you will ever get FTTC is dependent on your area.
You did not post your router statistics.

OP is on an 'up to 8MBps' package, not actually getting 8. Her best speed is barely 1MBps.
At 8km out, I'm surprised that she is able to get ADSL at all.

I live opposite our village exchange (less than 100metres). My Bband speed used to be c6-7Mbps but has fallen to between 0.5 and 1.5Mbps over the last three or four months. I'm with TalkTalk. Someone suggested that it is Openreach(BT) who have put restrictions on the line? Is this likely or is there a general problem with reduced speeds from TalkTalk. (I haven't made any conscious changes to my computer (Mac) or to my router.)
