No, I think I mis-understood the instructions ref the ctfmon and edited out some of the languages, I have just tried putting them back and I am re-booting the laptop now.

I have the Icons but not Start button and egg-timer on bottom row??

Just sitting there with no hdd light flickering.

    Still stuck folks!

Even if I get the explorer screen on and a start button, everything then freezes.

Tried a new account and that just sat at Creating set up.

Have to agree with the opinion that the original problem was software rather than hardware for in Safe Mode it almost flies in comparison.

But how do I get out of this now? I thought I may have been too ruthless with the startup to run in CCleaner, so have now enabled them again but no go. To the best of my knowledge I have reversed what I think I have done, but obviously not.

    Help!! DG

You may get away with doing a System Restore to a point before you got trigger happy.

Failing that, you may be looking at a reinstall of XP. Backup any important data to an external device before doing this.
How do I add a signature?

Before I go on the final step of re-installing XP, is there anything else which can be tried?

Can't think of anything likely to save you time... except maybe nLite.

Ah, now the real crunch, owners have no XP disk (did they supply them with Advent's?) my XP is classes as too old a version for repair.

Currrent status, it will boot into the user and give the icons on the screen, but no Start button, tried stopping, and the re-running explorer from the Task Manager and it just freezes.
    Thanks
    DG

N.B. remembered my newer XP disk in the process of trying a repair now.
