google and chrome gets quite a few mentions on that log, none of which are required for a machine to run well and browse

Very little of what's there is required but I doubt anyone here would be content with a simple web kiosk.

IE9 perhaps; IE8... not so much.

I don't believe that IE9 is XP compatible, anyway none of the browsers should cause the system to stutter/freeze IMO

correct about IE9 and XP, they don't go. Browsers stuttering may be down to any add-ons rather than the browsers themselves, check what's running in them....having said that, flashplayer's been a complete PITA recently, I had to reload it again yesterday :(

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Hit [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del], select New Task, type explorer.exe and press [Enter].

Ok I have them back, but the Eggtimer is constanty on, with Cntrl-Alt-Del got the Task Manager up, only processess running are the System Idle Time and Spoolv.exe - no HDD light showing usage.

The only other thing I notice is the small Blue Bar at the side of the start button (quick launch I think) is blank.

Arrow on the top of the screen, and Eggtimer when I take to the Start line.

    Thanks

On the Browser, this is a 70+ year old, he couldn't handle the change to Chrome so have put him back to IE. DG

What were you doing immediately prior to everything vanishing?

    Tried rebooting?
How do I add a signature?

Several times. Too much at once, and I do know better:o

Even Shutdown via the Task manager does not work, have to do a hard switch off.

Restored it to a day or two ago, but that hasn't done it.

Can get in ok in Safe Mode, but obviously need to get the real mode working.

Had you installed, or removed, any programs etc. or hardware (especially things like flash drives/external hard drives)?
How do I add a signature?
