OP - if you don't want to confront your neighbour you could always get one of those "H" markings painted in front of your drive. Worked for us when people kept blocking our drive (we live near a museum so people literally park anywhere on a Saturday).

I think it costs about £150 if you ask the council to do it but I gave the lining contractors £20 and they did it for me when they were doing some other lines at the same time.

Councill might be interested if they were claiming single persons discount

put your bin out earler next time in the space.

Bin men don't care for having their bins blocked.

Is it taxed are tyres all good, lights working.

Perhaps he comes home after having a drink sometimes.

Wrong info. It can be depending on a number of reasons.

Go ahead and specify them then rather than just stating I'm wrong and trying to big yourself up.

I'll tell you now for a fact, both councils I worked for would have no interest in this and neither would the police.

It's not illegal to park on a pavement, outside of London, unless there is a local bylaw prohibiting it. Check with your local council.

As you have stated it's not illegal to block an empty driveway.

However it is a problem if you are causing an obstruction. If you can't get your bins past his car then that also means a wheelchair user could not get past, and a double pushchair would have no hope.

When I park on the pavement, that's what I use, the double pushchair test. If you could get one of those past without faffing then it's ok to park there. I might eventually fall foul of some bylaw or other but I wont be inconveniencing anyone.

As for what to do. If he wont listen to reason then the comedy option is to keep putting your bins by his drivers door. Make sure the bin handle "accidentally" got 2 week old sour cream spilt all over it when you were loading up the bin.

I know exactly what you are going through. I have posted on here before about the exact same thing. I have put it down to some people aren't like us being respectful, thinking etc and unless you tell them in plain and simple words they think that they are the untouchable, king of the street etc. I put a 'no parking' sign up, had a white line put down by the council but the same offender continued to carry on. Until, one day when they parked over my drive when I was out. My friend, who lives over the road has no drive way and so always parks on our main street, parked in front of them leaving not 1 inch and on the way home from the school run I decided to park right behind the offender blocking their EMPTY driveway and again not leaving 1inch. I got out of the car and went and sat in my friends house for a cuppa watching the developments that were going to happen. It wasn't long before the offender came out in a hurry for work and was stuck...couldn't move forward and couldn't move back. About 45mins later the police came and asked me and my friend to move our cars, we refused! The offender was oblivious STILL to why I wouldn't move my car, why I was angry and by now shouting. My friend eventually moved hers back but I was standing my ground and explained to the police and him what he had been doing. The offender said he didn't realise and was sorry but that he got to know my routine, because I had small kids once I was in from the school runs my car hardly went out in the evenings so basically he was using it as a extra parking space for his family. This angered me even more. Eventually they moved out of the rented property and I was adament that when new people moved in my daily, weekly pattern was not going to be the same so sometimes I leave the car on the road, park it in the driveway, walk to school, drive to school etc and it has been so much better. Give these people an inch and they take the mick!!!! My friend who also has had trouble with her driveway in a small cul-de-sac, bought an old road worthy banger with car tax and insurance and permanently keeps it parked up on the road, outside her house and up to her driveway to stop her neighbours from thinking it is a guaranteed slot knowing she lives on her own with 1 car and them a family of 5 with 5 cars and over parking her drive continuously.

The same thing happens to me sometimes. I have a double driveway, but only have 1 car, and others seem to have noticed this. There are about 3 or 4 cars which often park blocking access to the side of the drive I rarely use.

Most of the time it's not a big problem, but a few weeks ago a car did prevent my Dad from parking up when he was visiting.

Which, to be blunt, my response would be, "so what!"

Around our way, selfish gits open their whole gardens to car parking and expect everyone else not to park outside their houses, because it "blocks their driveways." They cannot expect to have the whole road exclusively reserved for their own use.

They are known as courtesy lines and have no enforcement and doing so without permission from the highways agency or council, will have you in hot water.

There are some weird myths and false assumptions on this thread. There are also some very worrying trends about what people find acceptable remedies, such as keying the car and blocking the car in. But the height of vindictiveness is dobbing in the girlfriend, to the council, because she sometimes allows her boyfriend to stay. Seriously, are you going to make someone homeless over a flipping parking dispute?

I feel for all those experiencing the same as the OP, car or no car. It's so frustrating as people are forever blocking my car in or me out when I return (usually visitors to the area).......and it's used most days!! The trouble is, 2 doors up have double frontage and only one small car, but everyone budges down our end to make way for them......despite the fact I also have a drop down kerb, but only single frontage and a large car. I get obstructed by cars parked half way across AND fully parked across vehicles, our view out the drive is obstructed by vans and leave barely enough room for me to swing the car out left meaning I have to go right, turn round then go up the road - when all they have to do is budge up the road a bit more to resolve all that AND allow my eldest to park outside our house leaving a space free elsewhere in the road.............seriously is it that difficult to employ commonsense!

It's been like this for years and it's getting more and more frustrating with all the massive flat developments they keep building in our tiny bit thus inviting even more traffic/parking problems into the compacted area. The last one that blocked my drive I parked within a cm of his bumper (but he could reverse out) and left a large note on his window asking him not to park so selfishly next time. By the time he knocked the door, somebody had parked up behind him and he was blocked in.........course it was soft muggins that moved for him, I should've sent him off to find the other car owner so he learnt a lesson :rotfl:

We've used this in the past too :D

I would suggest ro OP and anyone else to go a bit careful when confronting people tho, I once got assaulted for very considerately parking a long wheel based van to unload, at the point the kerb dropped down and thus not in anyway blocking the driveway.........I will never ever know how I kept reasonably cool with that lot after being hit and having a crutch wrapped round my neck, and then accused of racism!!!!
