  • Probably be cheaper just to pay for a small B&B or similar if your only going to use it for these agility weekends.

thanks for the advice everyone. I think the the best option is to get rid of the aygo and replace it with a something economical and that can be used to tow. I am learning all I can about the the best trade off between towing power and economy, very fine line!

We looked into renting but they tend not to like pets and to be fair our cavalier king charles does shed fur, same goes for the B&B. Plus part of the fun is being with the rest of the club on the evenings for BBQs and social beverages, having be designated driver back to the B&B wouldn't be fun

Its not a fine line between towing power and economy.

The problem is people see the huge caravans with all the mod cons and huge amounts of space and I WANT I WANT kicks in.

Then you sign the paperwork and it suddenly clicks it weighs 3 times more than your aygo. Or your cars not type approved for towing and illegal to fit a towbar to.

I have a mondeo TDCI estate, around town (heavy traffic) the MPG is rubbish. On a run i can get 55mpg. Towing a 1200kg caravan i can get just over 30mpg.

Smaller cars may get better mpg around town but struggle with a caravan. Some eco cars have silly low towing limits.

They recommend the caravan weighs 85% or less of the cars unladen kerbweight. Some cars cannot tow this figure though so do your homework...

But stick to that as a maximum and you dont need a V8 turbocharged diesel 4x4 that weighs 3 tons and does 9mpg on a good day.

Our 1.4 hdi C3 does 60mpg, and apparently has a safe tow limit of 980kg. Which is surprisingly quite a few smaller caravans. http://www.whattowcar.com/ Not sure it would be the best combination though.

Yeah its smaller engines that take a bigger hit on economy when towing though.

But the mileage covered when actually towing is usually not a lot. Unless your away every weekend.

We probably do 2 or 3 thousand miles a year towing. Some years we have lots of shorter breaks and cover a bit more.

  • Why not just rent a car that has a tow bar fitted for each week-end that you are going to the dog events?

Week-end rental rates tend to be quite good value if booked in advance and are likely top work out cheaper than buying an extra car + insurance + road tax + MOT/maintenance.

Try finding a hire car with a towbar, On the dates that you need it.

    Cheaper to buy a car.
