tow car insurance

I current own and insure a Toyota Aygo which is shared with my girlfriend. She drives it the most, as I cycle to work. We want to buy a caravan to go to dog agility events, which are every month or so for a weekend. Obviously the Aygo wont tow anything so I need to purchase a new car. We have the option of using her parents Mazda 3, but that means paying to put me on the insurance, paying to fit a tow bar, then loaning it for those weekends we are away.

I would much rather have my own car that would do the job. I was thinking something like an old Peugeot 406 diesel around (1998-2000 age). But because my 5 years no claims bonus is stuck up with the Aygo policy I have 0 to use for this. I have got a couple of quotes for insurance and they are £850+ for the year. Considering it would be used for 6-8 weekends throughout the year to do about 100 mile round trips at a time, and very very little else I really don't think that is a feasible amount.

Is there anything I can do to help bring that down? The car will be stored on the road next to my house, I don't have the land to keep it off the road.

Buying/taxing/insuring/maintaining/mot it seems expensive for max 16 days use a year!

You will have to have it insured/taxed at all times as you are "storing" it on the road.

See if a local broker (not swinton) can get you an introductory discount to reflect your driving experience.

Why not just buy a car that will tow and replace the Toyota ? she will soon find out that its no harder to drive and unlike the toyota your face wont be part of the crumple zone.

Sorry I should have said. She uses it to commute 35miles each way 5 days a week so needs the economy. But economy and towing does go well

Use the MSE multi-car policy tool.

Alternatively, put the Aygo policy in your girlfriend's name with you as a named driver, and transfer your NCD to the towing car.

Look for an old VW camper - old enough to be regarded as a classic and get cheap (limited mileage and maybe agreed value) insurance and maybe zero road tax. No need to worry about NCD and no need to buy a tow bar or a caravan.

If I was to do that I would just use my tent. The point of having the caravan is for the shower, toilet and oven.

If you are not the main driver of the Aygo then you shouldnt be using your NCD on the car, is your girlfriend down as the main driver any you named or vise versa?

    Ignore this.

The policyholder (and NCD holder) does not have to be the main driver!

Dont think of just the aygo's economy, Think of the whole cost of having 2 cars.

Extra insurance, Extra road tax, Extra MOT, Servicing . etc etc etc.

One decent sized economical car will do all those jobs cheaper than running 2 cars.

What about renting a decent camper van for the weekend?
