I guess that you shoud install the driver before updating DIRECTX.

    Save first.

If you don't have a download folder, create one i.e., C:/Downloads.

Save all your downloads in there.

When you've finished the 'Save' and the download is complete it will offer you the option to run the file. Just click OK and it will install itself. You may have to agree to licensing agreements and occasionally click 'next' but it's pretty straightforward.

I've done the downloads, then the installs and still having no joy.I get the message,,failed to initialize direct 3d so i guess a new graphics card is needed.thanks for the help and replies up to now.Could someone recommend a graphics card, not too pricey but capable of handling this and similar spec games and also good to go with the flat panel monitor I'm hoping santa will bring this year.

First, verify that your video card meets the minimum requirements for the game.

You need (at minimum) a T&L-capable video card with at least 32 MB of video RAM.

    The supported video cards are:

ATI Radeon(TM) series (7000 or better)
    VE series (see note below)
    7000, 7200, 7500
    8500, All-In-Wonder 8500
    9000, 9200, 9500, 9600, 9700, 9800
    X300, X600, X800

    NVIDIA(R) Quadro(TM) series
    Quadro, Quadro2, Quadro4

NVIDIA GeForce series (GeForce2 and better)
    GeForce 2
    GeForce 3, 3 Ti
    GeForce 4, 4 Ti, MX 420, 440
    GeForce FX 5200, 5600, 5700, 5800, 5900, 5950
    GeForce 6600, 6800

Intel(R) Extreme Graphics (see note below)
    82845, 82865, 82915

If you have a non-T&L capable video card, such as Intel Extreme Graphics or Radeon VE series, then you need at least a 2.0 GHz processor.

If your video card meets all the minimum requirements, but the issue persists you will need to contact your system or card manufacturer for the newest drivers for your video card. Most manufacturers have these drivers avaiable as free downloads on their website.

If you have updated your drivers and still get this error, you must make sure that the DirectX features for your video card are enabled.

    Click on Start.
    Click on Run...
Type 'dxdiag' into the box (without quotes).
    Click OK.
    Click on the Display tab.
    Find the DirectX Features box.
The first feature is DirectDraw Acceleration. It should say 'Enabled' next to it. If it says 'Disabled', click the Enable button.
The second feature is Direct3D Acceleration. It should say 'Enabled' next to it. If it says 'Disabled', click the Enable button.
The third feature is AGP Texture Acceleration. It should say 'Enabled' next to it. If it says 'Disabled', click the Enable button.
Once all three are enabled, close the window.
You may now start your game. The error should no longer occur.

Found this on another board, it's the technical requirements for the sims 2. What graphics card do you have at the moment? Is it a PCI or AGP graphics card? You should be able to get a new one for under £50 that will play the sims 2.

    I have a 64mb gforce 2
which I bought in maplins electronics last year (it was in their white box collection which are cheap as the box has no printing on it) mine works fine with the Sims2 but wont work with medal of honour which is much more graphic intensive.

the geforce2mx isn't a real geforce2, so there's your problem. you need a new graphics card.

our downstairs pc has a gforce 2 mx 400 which runs the sims2 no problem.
Could it be that you are installing the new nvidia driver but they are not being used as the old drivers are still present?
When I installed my OS it was running on windows own drivers which did not have all the resolutions for my monitor,I had to install nvidias drivers before I could use the resolutions available to the graphics card.
Also sometimes directx fails to update to the newer version I know there is a way to do it but cant remember how.
