iPhone4 on Orange

Hi guys new member.

I've just cancelled my iPhone 4 contract which was with orange and it ends on 9th July. I've ordered a giff gaff payg sim card which I'll be using as of 9th July.

Does anyone know if iPhone's on orange are already unlocked or if I need to get it unlocked? If I need to, whats the best way to go about it?

Thanks.

Yes, they are locked and Orange charge £20 to unlock. Orange are often taking more than 30 days to instruct Apple to unlock iPhones, so you could have good grounds for a refund of the £20 if this happens to you.

If you 'just' cancelled the contract and didn't pay the Early Termination Fee you'll be charged until the middle of June pro-rata. I don't see any point in switching to giffgaff earlier.

I'm not switching earlier mate, my last bill will be end of July and the sim will be unusable as of 9th July which is when I will start using giffgaff. I just want to make sure the phone is all sorted and unlocked etc and ready to use immediately when I do switch over.

I'm not sure Orange will unlock mine as I've read elsewhere it's only if you purchased the phone directly from them - either online or in store. I got mine through phones4u. There are companies on ebay offering a similar service for £25-30 so may use them instead.

I doubt the unlock will be permanent if not done via Apple. As soon as there's another iOS version released, it may become locked again.

i have also updated my phone to 5.1.1 the new software from apple with No problems

it was a little bit more expensive but well worth it not to be waiting 30 days from Orange.
