Egg charged Payment cover without permission?

Hi All,

I have just checked the online balance of my Egg card and to my suprise found a charge on my March Statement for Card Payment Cover.

I have not ever used card payment cover before and telephoned customer services who where very helpful and explained that the Payment Protection would have been sold to me via a company by telephone called Rubicon.

I have never spoke or heard of a company called Rubicon and after 5 minutes on hold was told that they will cancel the "protection" and will refund me the £9.33 I have been charged.

Has this happened to anyone else? surely these card companies cannot just start charging you for something that you havent asked for without some type of signed agreement?

Unfortunately, this is a common practice especially when activating new credit cards by phone - often they just add policy without even ascking you and then cancell it if you ask them.
P.S. This is from my experience with other cards, not Egg.

I had the phone call offering me free cover for 6 months I think.
They could not believe it when I declined their kind offer! Sir it will not cost you a penny for 6 months and you do not want it! Exactly I said as I only spend on cards what I can afford to repay.
My reply was obviously not in the script he was reading from and after a silent moment the line went dead!
Never heard from them again because if they did ring I would have to drop into the conversation about being registered with TPS.

Hope I won't be charged, as I BT'd my entire credit limit yesterday!

Think it will be OK though. I had to phone them yesterday - new Egg card, tried to do 2 BTs at once, which isn't a problem as such, you just can't do more than one in the same log-on session as the one when you activate your card.

Lady on the phone tried to "make sure I definitely didn't want payment protection". I said yes, this was fine, I had the financial means to make this unneccessary. Nothing further was said. I shouldn't get any nasty surprises from them now, should I...?

Even when you do a balance transfer 'to' Egg online the option of 'protecting' your balance always appears - as a 'checked' radio button - and will be added to your account unless you change it by selecting 'no' therefore.

  • They must be a marketing agency employed by egg to ring punters up & sell them PPI.

I have heard of this many times with Egg. It is very poor. Hiding behind another organisation that THEY CHOOSE to employ to sell payment protection is not good enough.

    I had a similar problem.

After about 2 months with egg, I received a phone call (can't remember if it was egg or Rubicon) asking if I would like the payment protection insurance. I declined but to get the operator off the phone I said that they could send me through more information if they wished. The operator said that this was not possible and I had to give a decision there and then, so I declined again.

Then the payment protection charges started to appear on my account months later. I called egg to complain, as the charges had taken me over my credit limit and I was charged further, and the operator refused to believe that I had declined the payment protection, saying that it was a case of my word against theirs!! She said that she would remove the protection from my account but would not refund any of the charges. So, I asked to speak to her senior and after what seemed like an eternity on hold, she returned to say that her senior had authorised for her to refund the charges.

I am absolutely positive that I did not give the original caller any indication that I would like the payment protection, but this didn't seem to matter to egg, as my word was not quite good enough!!!

  • Just a thought, when you do balance transfers online, one of the screens asks you if you want payment protection, mentions the 'advantages' etc, etc, and the naughty bit ( in my opinion) is that the default is set to 'yes' i.e. you have to select 'no - I don't want payment protection'.

This might be overlooked, however I don't know what happens if you don't change it, because I always have!
