Metacam liquid dosage - 40kg dog

Nobody can tell me (called vet and 2 online pet pharmacies) about dosage of metacam. Was trying to work out if 32 ml bottle will last a week for Zara, she is 40kg.

The bottle size is in ml but the dosage in mg so really crap as there is no way to work it out myself as 1ml is not the same as 1 mg.... grrrr

Anyone has any idea?

Need to know as need to decide what size to get befor going to the vets.

I only need enough to last w week.

Snowmannnnnn???? You areound Advice please?

1ml is approximately 1gram so 32ml is 32grams. 32 grams is 32,000 milligrams. However, it is a solution where each ml contains 1.5mg of meloxicam.

You need the dose. If it just 1 week then I assume the dose is 0.2mg/kg of bodyweight on the first dose then 0.1mg/kg of bodyweight for every other day of the week. so...

0.2mg times 40 is 8mg on the first day which is 5.3ml
    then
0.1mg times 40 is 4mg on the subsequent days which is 2.7ml

    5.3ml plus (2.7ml * 6 days) equals 21ml...

So your 32ml bottle will be enough and for your information will last 11 days for your 40kg dog.

    Metacam® [FONT=NCOBC I+ BI Sans,BI Sans][FONT=NCOBC I+ BI Sans,BI Sans](meloxicam) 1.5 mg/mL Oral Suspension (equivalent to 0.05 mg per drop)

Will depend on the dose but on the suggested maintenance dose of 0.1mg per kg she will need 4mg a day, which works out at 2.33ml.
32ml divided into 2.33ml doses equals just under 14 doses so a bottle will last a fortnight, pretty much. Less if you're on a higher loading dose or require a higher maintenance dose, more if she's on a lower dose initially (vet might want to try to get away with as little as possible)

Thanks for that - going to pick up 32ml bottle from Goddards at £25.75 (!!!!!) after work. BUt they dispensed without me having to take the dog there with me (on past history).

Could get in cheaper at CH but taking Zara there and back on 2 busses each way and in rush hour - not practical.

I only need this little to last till her Fitzpatrick Referrals appointment on the 28th which is just over a week away.

    Thanks a lot.

There will be dosage syringe with bottle and instructions but wanted a general idea on how much do I need for that week and a bit.

Goddards prices are a joke... I also use goddards

Vetuk its £5.42 for a 32ml bottle.. But you would need a prescription they charge me £10 for one.

I know you needed it for now.. hope Zara is ok x

Where? That is an American website. A 40 pound dog would take 25 days to go through 32ml. A 75 pound dog (nearly 40kg but actually 34kg) would take 13 days.

    Thanks everyone...

Zara is 40kg (as I mentioned before) - there is a big difference between 40kg and 40lb ;)

One of the reasons I was askign about dosage as bottle size is in ml and dosage in mg. That is so wrong....

Yes, there is a measuring syringe with it (each unit per 10kg body weigh) but if one wants to calculate in advance how much one needs for a certain dog for a certain number of days - it is tricky.

As I said, 2 online pharmacies and a vet could not tell me... sigh....

    So thansk again everyone.
