And where is the old tyre, with this nail in ?
I would have thought that for them to bring a legitimate claim they will have to produce this tyre at some point and allow expert examination to establish it is the tyre in question and it was not repairable.
The tyre manufacturers state a correctly repaired puncture should last the life of the tyre, it a selling point.
    No tyre = no bill
    Stand your ground.
No interest in personally disputing it, much more interested in getting my employer to deal with it (whether to dispute or not I couldn't care less)

Who paid for the rental to start with ?

    a) You via expenses or
    b) company direct

if a) pay for repair and claim via expenses again
if b) return invoice saying you agree charge and asking them to claim via original method of payment

If the invoice is in your Company's name and addressed to them, then they are liable to pay it. However there may be (usually is these days) a clause within your contract of employment that states that by signing the contract you agree that they can deduct from your wages any uninsured loss that the company suffers as a result of your actions. If there is, you may end up paying for it anyway.
Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p
