Lost Share Certificates In Irish Republic

I’d appreciate some advice about lost share certificates in the Irish Republic.

My girlfriend comes from the Irish Republic but has spent the last ten or so years abroad: Spain, America, England. She now lives in Northern Ireland.

Anyway she held shares in a major company in the Irish Republic but her share certificates have been lost or misplaced over the years. She is now trying to get her hands on replacement certificates primarily to sell them.

She has been in contact with Computershare Ireland Ltd and they have confirmed her share details and the amount of outstanding dividends she is due. On two occasions she has phoned Computershare’s offices and they have told her that she needs to fill in a share indemnity form in order to have duplicate certificates issued.

On two occasions they said they would send her out the appropriate form but to date no such form has arrived. We’re suspecting that the form has went to her old home address: the address the shares were registered at but that house no longer exists, in deed none of her relations live there so it can’t be a case of the letter been wrongly delivered – or at least it shouldn’t be!

Anyway can you guys living in the Republic give us the low down on how this whole system operates and what sort of time scale we’re looking at.

As the main aim of the exercise is to sell all the shares again any advice on the best way to sell shares in an Irish Republic company in the UK would be appreciated.

As always thanks to Moneysavers for their valuable advice.

Kevin

If you require a replacement certificate, we provide you with the process and any subsequent charges in this category.
    1. Can a Stockbroker or Third Party order an Indemnity for lost certificate(s)?

In accordance with our procedures we are unable to send an Indemnity to any third party without written authority from the shareholder. We can only forward the Indemnity to the shareholders registered address, unless the shareholder has specifically stated forwarding instructions to their stockbroker in a covering letter that has been signed by all shareholders.

Information regarding this procedural change was sent in November 2005 to all member firms of the Association of Private Client Investment Manages & Stockbrokers (APCIMS) in the 'APCIMS Update'.

    2. Can I advise you of a lost certificate(s) via email?

    3. Can I pay the Indemnity for lost certificate(s) fee's over the telephone?

    4. How do I replace a lost, stolen or destroyed certificate?

Replacement share certificate(s) can be obtained through the completion and return of an Indemnity for lost certificate(s). In most instances it is usual for an administration fee to be charged for the production of an Indemnity. Original certificates are cancelled when an Indemnity is raised to cover the risks associated with their loss so please ensure that you are certain that the certificate has been lost before reporting it so, as fees may be incurred.

To request an Indemnity please contact us advising of your full name, address, the company in which you hold shares and the certificate number and amount of any share certificate(s) still in your possession. Please also ensure that you hold a current bank card to cover applicable charges whilst on the phone. The types of card we accept are:

    • MasterCard

    • Solo

    • Switch / Maestro

    • Visa

    • Visa Electron

Please note, American Express cannot be accepted

Payment over the telephone is required to complete your request. You can locate the correct phone number to call by selecting the Company name that your query relates to on our client list to request an Indemnity over the phone.

Looking at the above, it may indeed be that the indemnity form has been sent to the last registered address. However, there appears to be a telephone service as well?
