Westminster council do NOT allow Sky

Dear Forum Members, Greetings. I with other residents in Westminster council feel that even in 2012 we are still marginalised due to the fact that we are NOT allowed Sky due to listed building/English Heritage restrictions. Just want to know if there is any way around it (legally) to enjoy Sky. Moreover, we also do NOT have DIGITAL service of Virgin media. The ONLY option is the analogue virgin (highly substandard and we pay nearly the same) or so called Homechoice/Ticali and now prbably Talk Talk Tv.
Need help, please.
Many thanks for you kind read and opnions

Hi,
According to the flowchart on Westminster councils website, it is possible to mount a Sky dish on a house without planning permission even if you're in a conservation area, if you satisfy the criteria:
http://transact.westminster.gov.uk/docstores/publications_store/planning/satellitedish/planningpermission.pdf
Failing that, I would imagine it would be relatively easy to obtain planning permission, especially with a well planned installation, or using one of the several types of unobtrusive dishes - possibly one of the tranparent models?
If all else fails, and you have a window facing in the right direction it is sometimes possible to have an indoor dish which can "see" the satellite through the window. I used a tripod mounted dish pointed through my attic window with no problems when living in a rented house with a landlord who wouldn't allow a dish to be mounted on the exterior of the property.
EDIT: Failing all of the above, I beleive that there is sometimes a "loophole" where it is possible to install a flat panel satellite antenna in areas where satellite dishes are specifically prohibited.0 -
You also have the option of Freeview...No free lunch, and no free laptop0

You'll be surprised what can be achieved with non standard dishes or choice of site to hide them on listed buildings, see three local CAI installers for ideas and written quotes.

For me I would happily swap Sky for a listed building in Westminster though.0 -
Probably a cunning plan to rid Westminster of proles, as the lower the demographic the higher is the take up of Sky TV.That gum you like is coming back in style.0

Hi everyone. Thank you very much for your thoughtful suggestions. I mistakenly left out a vita point - we live in the CityWest Council Estate under City of Westminster council. In short we are NOT allowed at all to avail sky with a sky dish.
I would appreciate any comments on this.
I thank in advance for your valuable recommendations.0 -
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Hi, thanks for the invaluable responses. Unfortunately, I do not have any windows facing south. All my windows are in the East side of the flat and I am on the ground floor0
-
Also I have a tall (9 storey) building in the East side of the building just 15 feet away from the wall. That is the whole picture. I can see people in the second floor up wedge their dishes out through the window and take it back when the going gets though. No one puts out any dishes like the upper floors...probably the 9 storey building is blocking the signal0

Not sure if this will help you

Services: Commission sets out right to use a satellite dish in the Internal Market
The European Commission has adopted a Communication in which it states that private individuals should be free to use satellite dishes without undue technical, administrative, urban planning or tax obstacles. The right to do so flows from the free movement of goods and services, which are both fundamental Internal Market freedoms. The Commission's intention is that the Communication will respond to the numerous requests for information and clarification which it has received on the subject in recent months from private individuals and the European Parliament. This Communication is the first initiative under the new Strategy for Services, launched in January 2001 (see IP/01/31).
