I know you probably didn't mean it to be but your last sentence is a bit harsh - I actually said that I was going to roll my sleeves up and do some of the graft myself in order to get the cost down now that I know he can't move on the price of the units!!
Absolutely it wasn't supposed to be harsh and thanks for recognising that. What I meant was that the best solution is not always the cheapest and as you have all the data in your hands only you can make that decision. Of course you have to make your own books balance but my warning is that everything you take on also represents a cost - particularly if you add up the numnbers of hours you will spend on it and then multiply the total by what is an equivalent hourly rate for you.

But I suspect you are probably on top of all that.

    Good luck with the project.

    Cheers

just to add, the neighbour i am quoting for stipulated the wickes range. i have as an independent, the same door better units with quartz for around the same price, with more flexibility in unit sizes.

i was surprised to find wickes could have beat BM prices as they have just dropped the extra 20% from the sale.

independent fitter with access to several suppliers is the better all-round way to save and get better quality.

The price comparison was done with the extra 15% off but I phoned Wickes and the guy told me that this offer will be back on the 28th May (in the meantime they have 25% off installation). I suspect they do this so as to not fall foul of advertising legislation which they would if they had a constant discount.

Yes, I know all about time/cost issues - it's on this basis that I want to get a cleaner because it seems I spend half my well earned weekends cleaning and doing the laundry!! Yet, it seems so extravagant!!

But with the kitchen it will be a one-off exercise (albeit over a month or so) and it's quite good fun in a way - a bit of a labour of love.

As it is though, we have come to a mutually acceptable agreement with our kitchen guy.:):):) The difference between his first and second quotes is indeed enough to buy and install some granite/quartz worktops!! (2 x c2m lengths and a 1.2m breakfast bar) and, as I said, part of the reason we got there by us taking on most of the prep work.

    Thanks once again.
  • Travis Perkins, Wickes and Benchmarx kitchens are all supplied by Gower Kitchens. Same products different names.
