Free USB OBDII software
Is there any generic freeware OBDII software that I can use with a USB OBDII cable?
I bought the cable from Ebay a few years ago to use with VAGCOM so I could read the fault codes from my Golf. I now have an X-Trail and would like to check for codes. The cable has nothing on it to suggest the make, just OBDII printed on the plug.

a google will pull up some free software but it might be full of trojans too
personally i suggest you invest in a basic code reader thats up to date and costs less than £300 -
I've done a lot of searches and haven't found anything useful, like you say plenty trojans! I have considered the handheld devices but in true money saving style I'm looking for a free option at the moment.0

Pretty sure there is but will only be read only.
Look at it as £25 a throw to reset a code that VW dealers didnt clear. I use VAS better than Vagcom and can buy other vehicles proggies.0 -
Never found anything useful, neither.0

Not really solving your problem but useful for anyone searching, a Bluetooth OBDII reader is about £15 on ebay and Torque is free for Android phones. I just used it to reset the fault on my SAAB 9-5What goes around - comes around0 -
Torque may be a good option at half the price of a handheld scanner. I'll have a look on Ebay.0

Is this the sort of thing I need?

This seems to be about the cheapest that is posted from the UK, there are some a couple of pounds less but from China so longer to deliver.0 -

Thanks I'll go through the list tomorrow. I've gone through similar lists already including some of the ones on there. A lot are no longer free or you need to have bought hardware to make it free by using a serial number.0

Which works very well. There is slight "lag" with the real time information, but it's perfectly useable. Reads/resets basic fault codes too.0
