.... just to add, there are more freely available disk imaging tools available on Hirens Boot CD (under backup tools): http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd
DriveImage XML 2.30 backup any drive/partition to an image file, even if the drive is currently in use, a very good freeware alternative to Ghost / Acronis
G4L Ghost 4 Linux 0.34a a hard disk and partition imaging and cloning tool similar to Norton Ghost.
Macrium Reflect 4.2.3775 Create complete backups of your disk partitions, including operating system, installed programs and all your settings.
XXClone 0.58.0 The simple way to clone a Windows disk to another disk, it makes a self-bootable clone of Windows system disk.
Hiren's Boot CD can be downloaded here: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/
I have also used Paragon backup and recovery (free) and found it straightforward, easy to use and for Windows backups one of the better options out there: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/
Also tried EaseUS Disk Copy Home Edition 2.3.1 (free): http://www.easeus.com/disk-copy/home-edition/
I was curious to see if I could backup a TrueCrypt encrypted partition/volume and then restore it using some of the software above, should be possible with sector by sector copy but I can't recall if I found a suitable candidate. Will have to try those tests again when I have time.0
