blackberry in majorca

Hi all, my 17 year old is going to malaguf for a week. He has a blackberry on payg. Whats the best way for him to use his phone on holiday to keep in touch with mates he has gone with, to ring home if need be, to keep facebook uptodate and for me, his concerned mum, to ring him if necessary

Well, having a 'blackberry' can make a difference for facebook and BBM, but not for phone calls and texts.

For phone calls it's more important if it is unlocked and what network it is. The cheapest option is to use free wifi and a local sim. More expensive alternative is some roaming bundle from the provider, but I am not sure that they exist for PAYG customers. And the last option is some special international roaming sim: Mobile Roaming

Tell him to turn off data roaming and just text you to let you know he is ok.

Data charges will eat up his credit very quickly.
  • on PAYG the credit will just run out and the phone will stop working.

Each network is different for roaming data charges.

Reserach the best bundle if available on the network, T-Mobile have a relatively neat arrangement where you have to buy a data bundle when roaming, Vodafone is good for modest usage at £2 a day but if you overstep the bundle you burn the rest of your credit quickly.

Turning off data is best but may be like chopping a limb off for a teenager !

T-Mobile payg: Text EUIN50 to 1024 for the £10/50MB booster for Europe

50MB on a Blackberry is a healthy amount as they compress data

    o2 Pay & Go customers

£3 a MB data in Spain
How do I get Chosen Country - Spain?

For just £5.11 a month, you can get a flat rate of only 25p per minute for calls to the UK and other selected European countries. And receiving calls is absolutely free*. There are two options to suit you and your travels:
    • 1 month, to tie-in with your next trip
    • A rolling monthly subscription, which you can cancel whenever you like (minimum 1 month)
To sign up for just one month text 'SPAIN MONTH' to 21300 free. Or for the rolling option text 'SPAIN' to 21300, also for free. Then sit back and relax in the Spanish sun whenever you're calling home.
How much can I save with Chosen Country - Spain?

Standard Chosen Country Spain Making a call (UK landline & O2 mobiles) 35p 25p Making a call (Other UK mobiles & EU) 35p 25p Receiving a call 18p Free All prices shown are per minute and include VAT
*Subject to an overall cap of 1000 minutes/month applies for calls made and received.

So are calls or data more important o2/T-Mobile ?
