That is most definately a chasm, not as crack. Definate surveyors job. If I had a crack in the wall like that I'd be living in my car!!

And I wouldn't park it near the house!!!!!!!!!!

And to think I was worried about some hairline cracks we have!
I would be worried about spiders coming out a big hole like like.

Good morning......... the house is still standing, but the car is parked on the other side of the road! I am sleeping at the back of the house but this bedroom was going to be the next room I camped in whilst I worked around the house!!

Next door is being refurbished by a LL and have spoken to the plasterer who said there was a crack his side which was bonded etc. and "will be fine".

No bulge at front of house.

Yes there are chimney breasts, gas fire downstairs which I've not used and an open fireplace in back bedroom which I'm having moved downstairs. These are all on the other side of the property, the neighbour's chimneybreasts are also on the other side (if you see what I mean).

Don't think there was bomb damage........ all the houses around are the same age as this one, late 19th century.

Not sure about mining, I am in the West End of Newcastle where most people are improving rather than demolishing.

This house had been empty for 6mths before, and was a bit damp. I have had the front paving which was at the same level as the DPC lowered by 5" and the guttering and down pipes etc repaired. Hopefully it will be dryer now :D

San Andreas Fault? A possibility with continuing global warming I suppose:D

I'll get a couple of local builders in to hear what they have to say and get a quote and also try to catch the LL next door to see if he's selling soon??? The To Let board is up already though, so probably not.

Cheers every one.. I'll carry on stripping, good to know I cheered up everyone's Friday evening................;)

Hi stilernin, thanks for the update, I hope you don't think I was laughing at your plight, it was some of the comments that had me in fits, I sincerely hope that everything works out well for you, you seem such an up beat person with a very possitive attitude, a great way to be.
    Best wishes, Beth

Blimey......... should I be moving back in with relatives??

    Point taken about the 'crack'........

What about the rest of the rooms?

The last picture is an example of the plaster coming away. This is the vestibule (not the party wall) which is poor at the bottom half of the wall and good (been replastered?) at the top. As I'm going from room to room taking off heavy painted paper the walls vary from good to poor, as in the picture shown. Was planning to do the whole house in 1700 lining paper then painting. Paying for the hall stairs and landing and doing the rest myself. Can the poor bits of the walls be skimmed leaving the good bits, then papering all of it? What is the best way to tackle this?

OK...is the sun over the yard arm yet? If so, I'm off to open a bottle before reading your replies :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I think I'd be worried about BATS coming out of a crack like that

Crikey! I made a note of this on one of these property programmes because we've got some: "cracks greater than 3mm are serious". Listen, don't rely on builders to assess this. I was reading a building forum - builders were talking about cracks and possible subsidence - the recommendation for much smaller cracks than this was to get a structural engineer to look at it.

    Good luck.

most plaster cracks are not a major problem.
when the crack has affected the brickwork, and the bricks have actually cracked, then it really does become serious.
