Exploding Oven Door

Morning All,

I had one helluva night last night.

Put 2 potatos in the oven for tea, the oven that came with the house we bought and moved into 2 months ago. The oven itself was fairly well kept and seemed in a good state so we kept it, its one of those electrical fan ovens that just slides into a section of the kitchen.

Anyway we haven't had a problem with it until last night. After only being on for about 35 minutes we heard an almighty bang and the sound of glass shattering.

Went into the kitchen and all over the floor was chunks and shards of glass. It seems the oven door blew out from the inside sending glass in all directions with enough force to take it as far as the kitchen window sill which is directly to its right and make small dents in the american fridge freezer to its left.

Now I've got this covered by the insurance company but where do I stand in terms of reporting it to the manufacture given we didn't buy it and it could be at least 10 years old?

The oven is located at chest height and could easily of done some damage to the face / upper body had one of us been in front of it.

Thanks in Advance

While it sounds a bit harsh to say it's nothing out of the ordinary, it's something that can happen to most ovens. Small cracks in the glass (caused during the course of normal use) can make the glass explode when they are heated up. It does make a noise, and can be a bit scary, but the glass is safety glass (so no sharp edges) though, yes, it could damage something or someone if they are in the way.

In other words, there's no design flaw, or dangerous product. The manufacturer may take pity and send you another glass for the door, but that would be unlikely.

This is the thing I've accepted its an old oven and this sort of thing does happen BUT...

My concern is the verocity at which it exploded with enough force to dent mental, stick in walls and reach the far end of the kitchen on the window sill (which is quite high up considering the distance it travelled).

I've no doubt had someone been in front of that some serious maming could have occured. This is my only real area of concern.

Everything was fine inside the oven, no food exploded or anything to prompt the shattering.

There is nothing stopping you from sending a polite, factual letter to the manufacturer.

Oven doors explode, as others have said.

There is no reason other to contact the oven manufacture to see if they'll replace it.

Older glass does have a bit of a punch to it, whereas newer glass will just crumple.

Point is, nothing happened, no children were harmed and every oven manufacture knows the oven glass can break in various ways and deal with injuries as they receive them. All that will happen is a generic "Thank you for bringing this to our attention, we constantly strive to provide the best in terms of safety and our new ovens have better safety glass
    Sincerely X"

Excuse me for asking, but what difference does that make?

This happened to our Hotpoint oven a number of years ago,i think it happens more than people realise.
We wrote to the manufacturer and got an apology, but no offer of replacement
