My new mattress retains heat better than my old one and took a little bit of getting used to.

Stop having the heating on in your bedroom, even if you do turn it off before bed. 16 degrees is fine for a bedroom, you don't need it hotter.

Use a wool-filled mattress protector. Cool in summer and warm in winter. John Lewis does a great one for about £35.

You're right, that does seem counter intuitive! Does you feel any of the scratchiness of the wool at all? Mr A can't have wool next to his skin as he has psoriasis. I would love to be able to afford a fully silk duvet, as I've had a silk bedspread before now, and it was wonderful.

They're not scratchy. They're encased in cotton. I really recommend them.

I got a fogarty one from http://www.justlinen.co.uk/dorma.asp and it's fully encased in a cotton cover. M&S and Tesco stock wool ones as well.

I too lust after a silk one but that's a luxury that will have to wait :(

The past couple of nights have been really humid here in and Ive turned off the heating in our bedroom and just have it on downstairs now, and Im a really cold person!

Do you really need the sheet as well as the duvet? Id get really hot I think if I did that as I find sheets get tangled around you more than a duvet.

The only thing that helps me in the summer is to have a fan on full blast all night as I cant sleep without a duvet. I really want to get a ceiling one installed. We looked at air conditioners in B&Q the other day - but decided no way after seeing the price

I bought a new mattress last year and thought it was just me and that I was going mad/imagining it etc, lol thank you for putting my mind at ease!!

I took to having the duvet folder over at the bottom of the bed and just having a sheet, not wearing pyjamas or the like and turning the bedroom radiator off completely!

Try using just the duvet cover without the duvet in it, and a couple of those fleecy underblankets on top.

We've got a double layer duvet that unclips - one half is a light summer duvet, the other is a thicker autumn duvet, and when they're clipped together it's an ultra-thick arctic winter duvet. Got it from M&S I think...

We've got a 3+1 tog duvet which popper together for more warmth. We bought them from Ikea but overseas so not sure what they would cost here, I think they were the equivalent of about £30.
We've got the 3 tog one on at the moment having just put our winter duvet away for the summer. We're perfectly warm enough and don't get too hot with the 3 tog but prior to having that one, we've used just the duvet cover when it's been really warm. Perhaps you could try that with maybe single lightweight bedspreads or blankets folded down at the bottom of the bed should a thin duvet not be quite warm enough during the early hours?

If there's too much heat being reflected from underneath you reducing the warmth of the duvet won't make enough difference. I can't stand bedrooms which are too warm and haven't had any heating on in mine at all winter after winter: I prefer the bedclothes to be cosy rather than the room to be warm. I'd turn the heating off completely in there and open the window even if it's only just a crack. A firmly closed window in a bedroom is guaranteed to have me believing that's it's too stuffy.

If you can't or won't go along with the wool under-blanket idea, a sheepskin one keeps you cooler even a synthetic one.
