Advice needed about bedding

I'm not sure whether I should post here or on the old styleboard, but here goes!
The OH and I bought a new mattress in the sales, and as the weather is warming up, both of us are waking up because we're too hot. We've only got a 4.5 tog quilt on, and we woke up this morning to find the duvet scrunched up between us, we were both just under the sheet. Would a blanket and bedspread be any better for us, or does anyone know where I can get a thinner duvet?
Thanks in anticipation

ETA - I do have a duvet cover on the duvet, I just feel better with a sheet on as well...

One suggestion is to use two single duvets in summer. You can then throw one off if one of you is too hot and the other isn't. Also they may move and create a gap between them which lets some cool air in.
Do you sleep with the window open?
Have you turned down your central heating? We have never had it in the bedroom and yet it is still too hot upstairs, so I sympathise.
If you go for blankets and a bedspread I don't think that will be any cooler.
Maybe your duvet is synthetic and that is making it too hot.
Maybe your new matress is one which contains the heat. Is it double sided ie one side for winter, one for summer?0 -
I am really jealous, where do you live that the weather is warming up? I still have my heating on most of the time and the weather is awful

Can you get a duvet that has a lower tog rate, I am not sure if 4.5 is the lowest. Dunelm Mill, Matalan or the Range are all good for reasonably priced bedding. How high are your radiators set? Is the room to hot overall which may be making you uncomfy? Can you open your windows slightly and have them set on a lock to let in some fresh air?
If you are in the UK I think you may be alright tonight as a frost is forecast. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -
Is it a memory foam mattress? These are notorious for being too hot.
If so, I've read that putting a thicker layer between you and the foam can help.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
You can get lower tog rated duvets now - 1 tog or 3 tog - what difference that actually makes I have no idea - dunelm stock them- clicky here0

Thanks both for your comments, and to answer some of your points:
- Unfortunately I can't sleep with the windows too wide open, as I end up with a stiff neck and shoulder, but the vents at the top of the window are open to let in some fresh air.
- The heating is on in the room until roughly the time we go to bed, and before we changed the mattress was great for sleeping in. This new mattress really seems to be a great deal warmer than the other one - I used to have to put fleecy underblankets and both four seasons duvets on the other one during the winter, and would probably be sleeping under the autumn one still. The duvets haven't changed by the way, only the mattress - it's a pocket sprung one, which I think might be why it's warmer - the pockets underneath us are retaining our body heat, whereas with the other one it would spread throughout the mattress.
Marisco, I'm in South Wales, and trust me, the nights are warming up. I'm not looking forward to sleeping on this mattress if we have a hot summer, if we ever do again:). I don't know if you can get lower tog quilts, will have a look in Matalan the next time I'm near one.
Newly, I was just thinking about one light blanket and a light bedspread, similar to what you now get in hospital, rather than the duvet, if you see what I mean?Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

It might seem counter intuitive but a wool mattress topper and duvet might do the trick - they're heavy but wool is better for regulating temperature. It certainly worked for me, my overheating reduced quite considerably when I stopped using my 4.5tog hungarian goose down and used wool instead.Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

Goodness me, they aren't cheap, are they?:D Knowing my luck, I'd need two of the 1.0 tog ones as I'm an awkward so-and-so! Still a good night's sleep will be worth it.Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

You're right, that does seem counter intuitive! Does you feel any of the scratchiness of the wool at all? Mr A can't have wool next to his skin as he has psoriasis. I would love to be able to afford a fully silk duvet, as I've had a silk bedspread before now, and it was wonderful.Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j

Turn the radiator off in your bedroom? I for one can't stand hot bedrooms, it is rarely on, even in the winter!0
-
I very rarely have the heating on in our bedroom I think in the last 3 years it has been on a total of 7 or 8 times, this was when the outside temperature had dropped to minus 8 and I was unwell.
I cant bear to be too hot at night and tend to wake up with the covers kicked off.
Perhaps turn the heat off an hour or two earlier than normal and see if this helps at all.1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480
