I'm interested to know what happens to those who have to leave home or those who leave care when 18, they will need to be given housing benefit surely..
I was on it at 16 when I was put into independant living, wasn't an option to live with parents..

Ohhhh, I hope so! I was under the impression from a friend who was denied ESA and had a review recently that noone got home visits. I do hope the reassessments for DLA in the future allow this as it is my only worry for being reassessed...

Polo_Bint, moving from DLA to PIP -- applying to move -- won't necessarily involve a face-to-face assessment for you. My MP told me ages ago, and it's now on the web page:
I have a life /or indefinite award period for DLA, will I have to
have an assessment even though my condition has not
changed / is never going to change?
    • Yes, but not all these assessments will involve a face to face consultation

They will in some cases simply re-assess on paper.

    I hope this helps.

Surely people can see that if a government is taking less in tax then it can't pay out as much for things such as benefits?

Polo mint your 'essay' really touched me. My frustration is not with how much is spent on DLA in total but the fact that many receive it because of supposed care or mobility need but don't need to spend money to make it better whilst claimants like you who has a genuine financial need don't get enough. I would really like a redirection of funds rather then them cut.

Care leavers tend to be exempt from certain aspects of the rules regarding receiving help in paying with housing.

Polo Bint - The problem is that you SHOULDN'T be having to pay to have a relative normal life. If the "spongers" and YES there are spongers didn't claim you would get the money that you and your family deserve.

I have looked at the support group criteria and I meet at least 1 with zero arguments by anyone, yet I work (as I am able) don't claim benefits (not even DLA) as I am able (at the moment but realise this is always a pay cheque away) so if I can do it why can't others?

The minority that abuse the system make the sensational headlines and spoil it for the rest.

Please claim DLA if entitled for your DD as you both deserve it!

I don't think anyone was denying there are people who abuse the benefit system, it's just that they are in the minority. As you say a few make us all look bad.

It's fantastic that your able to work, but not everyone can follow your example no matter how much they want to.

Thanks for the link clemmatis, much appreciated.

You're welcome. But I seem to have worried you unnecessarily.
In one of the sections it rattles on about when you put your written claim in that you nominate a professional who best knows yours needs etc... then it also states that as and when you are called for the assessment interview that the chosen professional must attend with you???

"Most people will also be asked to a face to face consultation with this health
professional as part of the claim process."

No. The "health professional" is the ATOS assessor who examines you. They say "health professional" because the ATOS employee probably won't be a doctor (I assume).

If they decide you must have a face-to-face meeting with their "health professional" and can't/won't arrange a home visit, you can go alone, or you can take someone with you -- a relative, a carer, or anyone else you choose. (That's in Section 21, on page 11.)

I'll see what else I can find about this. I'll also read through the piece again.

Sorry but I don't see why not if being honest. It's often mind over matter, I truly beleive if the govt said to people, no more or work many and I mean many would find work.

It's all too easy to remain on benefits and expect the tax payer to pay (somehow they don't expect an employer to pay) when with support and that is the key word here "support" it is possible.

Many don't have that luxury (like the previous poster) of ever being able to work - not at all possible. If they could - even if hard, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

There is no reason why I can work (and look after a family alone) and others with the same condition can't other than personal attitude!
