Carshalton area is nice. I have lived there for 17 years now.

try near Beddington Park / Hackbridge or Carshalton.

we lived in Hackbridge for a few years and the sewage could be smelt there on hot summer days, not nice ! Area is ok but prefer Wallington or Carshalton Beaches (you wont get a house there for 250)
We moved to Chipstead which is lovely, have a look in Coulsdon and Purley too. IMO nicer than Carshalton and Wallington, less busy plus Coulsdon has some great walking near by and 25 mins into London Bridge or Victoria.

If anything i'd say Purley is further to Croydon than Wallington or Carshalton. Probably not a lot in it. IMO purley is a step up from Carshalton, similar to Wallington. Epson is a bit far but very nice.
You'd get a nice Victorian house, 2/3 bed in Coulsdon for under £250.
Saying that there isn't much on RM at the moment there. Only thing I'd look at is this http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-34199155.html

Have a look along Croydon Road, from Waddon (Skoda&BMW dealer) along towards the top of Hilliers Avenue. Everything from flats (me!) to large bungalows, cottages from 1900s and some 70s builds. You have The Plough, some good bus routes, local shops and parks and Wandle. Just have a look at the roads off the main route.
