I have already sent them a 'secure message' do you think I should call too?

Yes - in my experience the person reading the secure messages isn't always at the same level of authority as the people answering calls - and I guess it's easier to gain some sympathy by making a personal connection when they can hear your voice.

When I have had any issues I aways send a secure message to complaints and without fail they phone me in less than 24 hours. Always very good and the last time I got a goodwill payment of £25.00 and I never even asked for any kind of compensation just requested the matter is resolved.

Whatever you decide always try and be nice.

I had exactly the same problem. I changed which bank the money would come out of. The online system showed we will take the minimum payment by DD from XXX bank account on XXX. There was a big green tick next to the text that said something like "You pay by Direct Debit" - however apparently this does not actually mean they will take it by direct debit.

I spoke to someone, they refunded the £12, however they would not accept that the system was at fault for implying they would take it by direct debit.

I closed the account as soon as financially possible.

Rang them, they have apaologised, and refunded the £12 and put back on the promotional rates. They also said the direct debit may not be set up by June (??) so to make a card payment, which I have already. I may just cancel the dd and do it manually instead! grrr!

It's so annoying, and I don't want it to damage my credit rating! I have now made payment using my debit card for April and May's statement...
Trouble is, you can only find out if the DD is working by giving it a chance. But if you pay by alternative means, they won't take the DD even though they said they would.

Two ways of testing the DD that seem to work are

1 - make a payment by debit card or real-time FP on the working day before the due date. The website will now show a DD of £0.00, but actually you're too late to stop the DD so they will take it anyway. Of course you may end up overpaying.

2 - if you're brave enough, check your bank account on the morning of the due date, and if the DD hasn't gone out, pay by debit card or real-time FP straight away. The payment should be credited the same day, though it won't appear on the website until the next day. At your own risk.
