MSE News: Fuel duty 'could rocket' to reduce Treasury shortfall

It'll have run out by then.
If that is the case why have we commissioned two diesel powered aircraft carriers?
Why are we still getting endless calls for new runways to increase airport flight capacity?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

I agree with you on this - the only organisations supporting this approach are the black box providers and satellite link companies.
Yes, and this is what petrol duty does. You pay per mile, with the price adjusted by the fuel efficiency of your car. Simple, without the additional expense of black boxes to install, monitor and maintain.
Road pricing will come as they will only be able to charge for highway use when we go back to horse & carts and pushbikes or that new fuel derived from water."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Fuel duty? Not on electricity.
Went to ExCel last week, they had a hall with Electric cars.
The queue for test drives were nearly empty.
Diesel/electric hybrid, petrol/electric hybrd, heavy slavish copies of steel dinosaurs. What about pedal/electric trike and quad bikes. There are so many single person journeys, we should be thinking lightweight alternatives.
Waiting in traffic light? you can pedal. Stop talking on that mobile phone. No time to go to the gym, charge up the quad bike.
I would like a twist handle bar progressive brake mechanism that uses regenerative braking first, then rubber pads for failsafe.
Ten mile range, with charging points in all supermarkets please.
This should be combined with Car Clubs, which can use diesel or petrol cars for long distance journeys like weendend outs, visiting granny. I would ride the quad to the nearest car club car, leave the quad where the car club bay is, and take the petrol car for the rental period. Cheaper rental for off-peak periods, please, I'm flexible.0 -
Factor in driving a much more economical / electric / hydrogen car by the year 2029 then.
The 'fear' behind this report (from the governments perspective) is that we will all be using much less fossil fuel (which can only be a good thing) therefore they will charge more tax to get the same revenue.
When you look at whats coming with regards to petrol engine developments, hybrids, etc, its not hard to think that by then most of us will be driving something thats do 80-90mpg rather than 30-40mpg.
This report is little more than scaremongering designed to get a reaction.0 -

+1

Because everyone makes a profit now, and the politicians get a nice handshake when they retire, and won't be worrying about the plebs in twenty years time.0
