    hi,
    in august 2009 i did a great road trip with my children, 16,14,12. they all enjoyed it and we had lots of fun. The scenery was stunning, the schedule not too onerous and all in all our best road trip.

    we flew into vegas (1 night), drove to Bryce NP (2 nights), then onto Torrey for Capitol Reef NP (1 night), then Moab (3 nights) to see Arches NP and Canyonlands, then overnight in the Mesa Verde NP in Colorado, onwards to Paige in Arizona (2 nights), north rim GC 2 nights, finishing in Zion for 2 nights.
    we did lots of stuff from hiking, 4 wheel drives, river rafting, star gazing....................awesome!

    This was ours:

    Las Vegas to Zion National Park (Kanab)
    Zion to South Rim Grand Canyon (via Lake Powell)
    Grand Canyon Helicopter trip then to Williams
    Williams to Boulder City (via Hoover Dam)
    Boulder City to Tehachapi (overnight stop - you could check out the massive meteor crator somewhere along this leg but you could also go via Death Valley esp. if doing Yosemite and Tioga pass is open to enter Yosmeite from the East)
    Tehachapi to Oakhurst (South entrance for Yosemite National Park)
    Yosemite to Santa Cruz (but could head elsewhere on west coast e.g. Monterray or LA)
    Santa Cruz to San Francisco

    Recommend roadtripamerica for planning too - it helped me out a couple of years ago:

  • About four years ago we did this road trip through the NE states (driving all the way):

    Louisville, Kentucky > Cincinatti, Ohio
    Cincinatti > Cleveland, Ohio
    Cleveland > Buffalo, NY 2 nights (for Niagara Falls)
    Buffalo > Albany, NY
    Albany > Boston 3 nights (Wonderful and better than NYC!)
    Boston > New York City 2 nights

    Quite tiring but very enjoyable - New England was lovely!

    I did a 4-week road trip a few years ago...now I live in the US.

    My road trip was:
    Las Vegas - Zion National Park - Bryce Canyon NP - Grand Canyon NP (north rim) - Page, Arizona, Monument Valley - Moab for Canyonlands and Arches NPs - Jackson Hole for Grand Teton NP - Yellowstone NP - Salt Lake City

    It was a fantastic experience and I've returned to several of these places since moving here. I'd also recommend Colorado for Rocky Mountain NP, Mesa Verde NP,Durango, Gunnison, Aspen, Boulder etc etc, and South Dakota for Mt Rushmore, Badlands NP, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave etc. Fabulous places.

    Decide how much time you want to spend traveling against being at places.

    I did a drive
    LA->vegas->death valley->eastern sieras->mountain pass->yosemiti,kings etc->Carmel->LA.

    by public
    Boston->DC->New O->Orlando->Datona.

    another drive.

    New York/Boston, then north into new england but not so good for kids.

    or south down the eastern seaboard.
