Well, me and 3 friends did...
New York -> Philadelphia (Train)
Philadelphia -> Kansas City, Missouri (Drove)
KC, MO -> Houston, Texas
Houston -> Miami (via New Orleans)
Miami -> Chicago
Chicago -> Cincinnati
Cincinnati -> Newark, NJ
Newark -> Small town on the NJ shore (Train)
Small town -> Newark (train)
Took 5 weeks all together. We stopped at lots of cities on the way. The trip was decided by the car delivery firm we were 'working' for (free car hire, just paid gas)
If you do the East Coast, you could go from New York down to Miami. You've got history in Philadelphia and Washington DC. There's the Appalachian mountains for all sorts of outdoor pursuits - plus there's loads of national parks around there. Orlando has theme parks and a great night life (Sadly, i never got to go out as I'd been bitten by a spider in Miami). There's beaches in Florida too (e.g. Daytona Beach - also home of the NASCAR speedway).
Here's a link to some East coast places. http://www.squidoo.com/east-coast-road-trip0
