Channels missing on panasonic tv - so frustrating!

Hi all, I'll try to be brief but no promises! I gained my parents panasonic flat screen tv at xmas which worked absolutley fine till about a month ago when it lost channels 3,4 and 5 (and possibly other minor ones). Despite numerous retunes they never appeared. This had replaced my old huge sony which was moved to the playroom but following a house refurb I wanted to replace it for a more flat screen tv. I swapped the tv's over briefly and the sony has always had all channels and the panasonic remained consistent in the missing ones whereever it was located. We were able to watch all channels on the panasonic using a digi box. This was only a temporary arrangement tho as the panasonic is too big for the play room but I just wanted to see how the flatness fitted in the room if you follow me. So today I purchased an ex rental 26"panasonic tv which seemed perfect. I expained my concerns re the tuning issue and was assured that as this was a more updated model all would be fine and I probably missed a soft wear update on my older model. But on getting it home it's much worse! I can hardly get any channels on it and I am so disappointed and frustrated. With the aerial at the corner (impractical position) I get channels 1,2,7,9,11,12,15. . but 1,2 and 7 are so distorted they are unwatchable. If I use an extension to the aerial so the tv is in a practical position my channel selection starts at 11, 12, 15, 18. I'm really confused that 3 tvs should give such different channel choices from the same aerial. How can this be? I can take the tv back but the point is I want a tv I can watch surprisingly! How do I know this won't happen with others?? I'll give you models numbers if it will help. Is this a quirk with panasonics or digital tvs in general?
Hope my waffle made sense!

We had something similar on one of our tvs - the channels had added to the existing positions so they new ones were up in the 800 channel numbers - it was only when instead of retuning to add new channels (which the TV tries to do) we retuned to replace all channels (which needed an active choice on the menu) that everything appeared0

Each tuner is different. I'm unclear if you are using an proper external aerial or a set-top one-the latter is rarely adequate for decent digital TV reception. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Nothing wrong with Panasonics in particular, but the problem you have seems to be the aerial, not the TVs. Take the TV back. You can't guarantee to get reception on any brand/model if you don't feed it a good signal.0

Or the cable/fittings. The picture on my Samsung plasma was dire on some freeview channels & would cut off if the Sky box was on,wasn't really concerned about it as I mainly use the Sky anyway, but when it was cut off last month (they didn't change my payment from invoice to DDebit ) I needed to use it for a day or so,turned out it was a old 2 way splitter I had fitted to branch the signal to the bedroom & living room.Removed the splitter & barreled it & the pictures perfect now!:rotfl:0 -
All sorted, but thank you for your replies anyway. Apparently it was getting confused with 2 different signals so when it was retuning they disconnected the aerial just to avoid the weaker signals then reconnected. That probably doesn't make sense but I now have all fully functioning tvs so I'm happy :-)0

Most sets scan for channels starting at UHF 21 (i.e. the lowest channel) and work their way through to 68.
If 'your' transmitter uses higher channels, it is possible that your set stores weaker signals from the lower channels first and then has to store stronger signals in the 800 range.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
