Advice please re neighbours' electric gates

Who owns the land the gates sit on?0

The OP has 3 options: –
1 commit criminal damage to stop the gates working.
2 get the remote controls upgraded, so they work properly (that is what I would recommend).
3 consult a solicitor and start a neighbour dispute that nobody will win except the lawyers
Just remember if you start a dispute through a solicitor you will be obliged to reveal this if or when you come to sell.
far better to have a friendly discussion as to the best way forward for all of you.
I'm not sure why you would have gates if they are not to be used, could you discuss an override switch, I am sure there must be one in fact. get a notice produced with your contact number on so you don't miss deliveries, how does your neighbour get her post?0 -

£400 electricity at £0.125/kWh is 3200 kWh
3200 kWh * 3600 seconds/hour * 1000 Joules/kWs = 11.52 * 10^9 Joules
Energy to lift 1 tonne [1000 kg] by 1 metre = mass * gravitational accn * height
= 1000 kg * 9.81 m/s^2 * 1 m = 9810 Joules
height you could raise 1 tonne to with £400 of electricity =
11.52 * 10^9 Joules / 9810 Joules/m
= 1,174 km.
This is enough energy to put a 1 tonne satellite somewhere way above the International Space Station [400 km up]
And this with electric gates? She is a nut job.
I don't have much to add to the main theme, but I would just like to take a moment to appreciate this reply. :T Always good to see applied physics!
Anyhoo, only thing I can think of is maybe going over there again, and nicely telling her this is causing you a problem and offer to go halfs on getting someone out to look over the gates to get them working properly? Maybe get a better intercom working? Or, if you still know the parents, get them involved?!0 -

In more earthly terms, £400 of 'leccy is enough to keep two kettles boiling 24hrs a day each day for a month.Mortgage debt - [STRIKE]£8,811.47 [/STRIKE] Paid off!0 -
just a thought re the use of electricity -
when the gates are kept open is the motor continually/periodically trying to shut the gates? this may result in wasted electricity (and a damaged motor) but as a couple of posters have already said, 400 quids worth seems ludicrously exaggerated.0 -
I can't believe the gates use electric while they're open. I've got electric garage doors and the only time they're using any power is when we open or close them.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

Could there be any dirt or stones down in the area under the actual gates? I know of some near me that had that issue and cleaning out the small gulley stopped problems for that owner. Unless there is not gulley of course! Just a thought. Which is they are trying to close automatically, then gate motor might be running more, but £400 does sound way to much even for that scenario.0
