Virgin to install mobile phone coverage on its aircraft
Daily Mail: Hello? I'm on the plane... Mobile phones cleared for take-off on Virgin Atlantic jets
ZDNet: Virgin Atlantic lets airborne passengers use mobiles
Aeromobile, the network provider of the service, has UK roaming agreements only with Vodafone and O2. Therefore customers of Orange, T-Mobile, Three and consequently Virgin Mobile will be unable to use the service. This is unlike OnAir, the service provider on British Airways' LCY-JFK route which does have roaming agreements with all UK networks (except maybe Three).
Vodafone customers can use the £5 for 25MB/day Data Traveller option on aircraft, which makes the cost affordable. I don't think any other UK network has such a deal, but if you want to surf the net via your phone, it can be worth getting a Vodafone PAYG SIM card just for this purpose.
