Weddings are traditionally supposed to be expensive, but these days you can get every kind of wedding favor you could imagine for pretty cheap.(except anything gilded!) usually all it takes is some careful searching online. forums like this are great cause people will help you find the best deals.

  • My £9 wedding cake - it's a shame about the swirly bits, they were on there when I bought it, as was the Christmassy ribbon and bow in the centre of the cake :o:D I added the pearly hearts and ribbon and the whole thing came in at under £9 :)

Hi, just thought I might lend a helping hand. I run a wedding favour business, personalised chocolate. They are of a high quality for very little outlay and I have just posted a money saving code on the forum too. A friend of mine who does wedding cakes say I charge too cheaply for them however my philosophy is that I do o.k and I don't want to rip people off and so many people as soon as you say "wedding" add about 150% on to the cost of whatever it is you are after. Obviously just a suggestion, I know a lot of people don't bother with favours.

This is just what I was thinking of, & I love the entwined hearts designs!! Expect an order some time next year hopefully! What sort of lead time do you need to fill an order for say, 150 mini bars, with the gold and silver entwined hearts design?

Ooh, I love planning my wedding, I'll be a little sad once it's all done!

  • Thank you Flowerofscotland :) I bought the cake in Lidl - it was £7.99. It had a Christmas bow in the centre of it so I removed it and chipped off the icing that adhered the bow to the cake. I replaced the Christmas ribbon with new ivory ribbon I bought from Ebay (I've got some left, if you want some, pm me your address and I'll post it to you :)). The hearts I made myself - I used some roll-out icing (most supermarkets will have it), bought some heart shaped cutters for a pound or two and stuck them to the cake with edible glue. I used a paintbrush to add the (edible) pearl powder to the hearts. I got all the little bits from Ebay and have loads left which I'm using for other projects (Christening cake for a friend etc). If you want links to the sellers, pm me and I'll point you in the right direction :)

I bought two cakes and used the spare one to practice on. Rather than having a two-tier cake, I'm using the spare one to cut up the day before - I'll put it into little boxes for the guests rather than do it on my wedding day. That way they get to take some wedding cake home with them and they get to see the cake on the day, too :)

This is how it started life:

  • There are lots of different colours you can use for sugarcrafting - you can pop it in the icing. As for the pearl lustre powder, they come in lots of colours too. If you buy the sugar crafting alcohol to mix with it, it gives you a much stronger pearl finish. You can find all the bits on Ebay - it's the same shop that sells the heart cutters.

I put the cake back into it's original box so the glue can dry. When I take the cake to the venue, I'll transfer it into a white cardboard cake box (I love Ebay!) so it looks like a professional cake, rather than a Christmas cake from Lidl :D

When you're experimenting with the roll-out icing, 3mm is perfect - 4mm is too much, 2mm bends and tears easily.

love the cake box idea ! i love ebay too :D

I might have one layer of cake for cutting and the rest cupcakes, with the red and ivory hearts on them to fit in with our theme.

  • I thought about cupcakes too! I was going to make some in muffin cases and some in cupcake cases to look a bit different. I'm keeping it to the cake though, there's only 25 of us and one cake will do the lot! I love the idea of red and ivory together! You could even use lustre powder for subtle effects - whether it's instead of using food colours or even on top of food colours. You'll have tons of fun experimenting :)

We had cupcakes and they were gorgeous - the only problem we had was no one wanted to take any coz they messed up the display :rotfl:.

I took them round in the end.
Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended :p
