Moving and cancelling virgin media tv, broadband & tv

Just phoned up virgin media to cancel my contract and there is going to be a whopping £180 cancelation fee!! I am moving end of next month and have to cancel the tv phone and broadband. We are only six months into my contract but because of a few factors ie work have layed me off I have to move back to N.ireland where they don't have virgin media tv fibre optic broadband but do have a crap telephone and slow broadband for high prices!
What would be my ammunition to cancel against these money grabbing a-holes?!

you signed a contract, you pay the bill.

They are not moving, you are, unfortunately you are liable for the remainder costs of the contract.

Money-grabbing? You signed a contract for 12 or 18m and now you want to break it, so you have to pay the ETC. A change in your employment or financial circumstances does not allow you to void your contract without penalty.
If VM cable is not available at your new address then you can move the contract to Virgin National, but this will start a new minimum term, and you'll still have to pay the ETC on the TV component.
So, in brief, no ammunition at all.

Er, I am in Northern Ireland and have fibre optic broadband etc.
  • The address I am moving back to (my parents) they don't have the facilities (no fibre optics) for virgin media tv because it's out in the country so surely that must be a valid enough reason to cancel my contract???

No it's not. You contracted at the current address, VM did not contract to supply you at any other location in the UK. Your choice to move to a non-cable area, therefore an ETC is payable.
If you do a forum search you will see that this question is asked almost every day. The answer does not change.

OP...You could try and do a disappearing act (not tell them of your new address, change bank, don't tell your neighbours of your new address, don't get Royal Mail to automatically forward post to your new address, etc.).

Trouble is if and when VM get a debt collection agency involved, they will try to find you by asking neighbours, etc. and will probably charge you for their efforts.

    It is your decision.
  • hi I could have similar problem as this gentleman in ireland, Im looking to move but lets say I want to move to place outside the virgin media area, will I get a similar cancelation fee at around 200?, I been with them for a few years, but moved 6months ago, I signed a 18month contract, so it will have a year left if I want to cancel. I personally thought they would not cancel to be honest, so I am happy reading this post to see they do provide cancelation fees.
I agreed the package so I will happily lose a few hundred, but what is the max Id have to pay? this would be a great help.....

I'm in the same situation all they can offer me is my broadband through bt line otherwise it's a £71.00 cancelation fee they have told me to go on simplified digital and get digital tv through them but it's working out £23.89 a month just through virgin plus a contract for my TV. Which won't be nothing like my TiVo box. I'm sorry but I think if they can't offer me the same sort of digital viewing that I have now then whats the point of staying with them. I can go with sky and get a whole package BB and +box for cheaper a month

What you pay willl depend on what package you have and how many months you have left on your minimum term.
The rates are given on the VM website.
