About to be struggling really badly

Hello all. I've been reading some of your lovely posts to others and hope that you can all help me out as well.

I am about to leave my job and I'm not sure what's coming next. I can't say much more other that I have been forced to leave, and as such will get a limited payout, mounting to little more than 2 months pay. As a teacher, I have already signed on with a supply agency, but now really need to sort out the finances.

I've spent this morning dealing with a backlog of paperwork and sorted out some financial details, but I really need to address a massive overspend that I get myself into each month and the corresponding credit card debt that has helped to fund it.

So if anyone can point out some obvious problems, please help.

You should be proud that you are doing something about it, I have put some suggestion in read. I can't believe your gas and electric are correct.

There are savings to be made but you need to readjust significantly by the looks of it.

Its hard when there is a big change in circumstances. Some on the other boards in particular forget you can be crusing along nicely then a sudden change and wham you hit that financial wall.

Try not to beat yourself up too much, most of us on here I am sure have sat and bemoaned all the money we wasted when things were going well and wished we had saved up when things went badly.

I think you may need to clarify a few things. Is the income you list yours which will go i.e will you be on benefits in which case things like council tax will be covered for you. Or is this your partners income and will be you new total income?

You haven't included anything for food and cleaning suppliers/household bit-such as toilet rolls etc. This is an area most of us overspend on and is usually a good area to cut down on.

The gas and electric seem massive. There are 6 of us in a 3 bed semi and we only pay £150 a month FOR BOTH. We have cut down a bit, but certainly don't sit and shiver in the cold or obsess about switching stuff off. We recently got our insulation sorted so expect next year to be lower still hopefully.

Nappies and baby stuff seems high as well. My youngest is still in nappies and we spend around £10 a month. Mind you I breast fed so no powdered milk costs lol.

No mortgage or rent costs?

You should find you will qualify for JSA, if you have a working partner it will only be the cont based version which is around £70 a week. Not sure if you get tax credits, as this may increase after you finish.

I would say at the moment the obvious stuff to bring down is the gas and electric.

Its hard at first, but once you find yu can live on a much lower amount of income we have found you value money and work less and home and family much more and money saving becomes a habit lol. You appreciate the things that really matter like health and time with loved ones.

Looking at the OP again I am wondering if they had just listed their income now and the bills they cover from it now with other bills comming from a partners income?

BUT you can't do a budget like that as a family. You need to budget for total income and total bills. Both need to cut back now and save as much as possible in every area as well as planning for when you are out of work in case you are out of work for any length of time (I suspect given the time of year and your work you will not be in a job till at least September).

I've only included information about my expenditure - my OH and I have separate accounts, so he pays for stuff like the house. I think that I've made a mistake with the gas and electricity values, but they have been high. We've just had new boiler, so hopefully the gas will come down a bit.

I'm panicking slightly and looking at the worst case scenario that I can't get another job. I'm in my 40's, been teaching for 20 years, and basically due to health problems this year am being forced out of a job I love. I have two young children (4 and 2) so things like childcare costs have been while I've been working. These will have to continue if I can get supply work.

I've had a look at the cccs website and they suggest a iva. This has totally thrown me at the moment and made think what a bl**dy fool I've been for so many years.

So far today however, I've managed to cut down some of my expenditure (or at least even it out over the year), so I'll carry on trying. Basically, I have a couple of weeks before I find out how hard it's going to be

www.schoolzone.co.uk - focus groups and surveys for teachers! extra bit of money - supply agencies fab though, I signed up and got a term's work straight away! Then even when had perm job they were always ringing so you will be fine. 80 for internet was the major thing that caught my eye x

That looks great. I'm rather hoping that my future is as a supply teacher. As I mentioned before, I'm looking on the really negative side at the moment financially, but am rather hoping that things won't get so bad that I have no income at all.

My priority has to be to finally face the debts that I have built up, and sort them out. It may be that a dmp is the way to go for that but it's still early days
