  • There was an interesting article in New Scientist about spam. Someone followed up all the adverts, and found that none of them actually had any mechanism for taking money or placing an order! ??? ???

  • Hi all,

I've been using a peice of browsing software called MSN Premium for the past year and it's fantastic at catching junk mail. It is a subscription service though and costs £60 / year. Of course it's not just a spam blocker but also gives you a subscription to McAfee Antivirus and Firewall (worth £55), plus some photo editing software and a great pop up blocker. Not to mention parental controls and multiple log in accounts - similair to AOL but a hell of a lot more user friendly ;)

This site has more info on it http://join.msn.com.

I would highly recommend it, all my spam gets put in a spam folder and then is deleted automatically after 7 days so l have time to check it for relevant emails. Of course you have a safe list and anything on it never gets junked. It's very accurate though, in one year it was junked 3 messages by mistake and only because they were send to a large number of people. Plus it has only missed less than 10 spam emails in a year.

I'm happy to pay the £60 cause it saves me so much time and gives me uptodate firewall and antivirus into the bargain.
    Sense is not common.

Another way of getting loads of spam is to put your email address into communications (e.g. postings, emails etc.). There a little programs ('bots') that rattle around the web basically looking for anything that appears to be an email address (usually by looking for '@') it then collects these and sends them to the spammers. Therefore if your email appears as readable text then you are leaving yourself open to be spammed.

I have several Yahoo accounts and get about 30-50 virus laden emails and spam each day. Yahoo is actually very good since it seems to capture 100% of viruses and about 99% of spam and places them in the 'bulk' folder automatically - I simply delete them once in a while. Also because I do not use an email cliebt on my PC (e.g. Outlook) it makes it harder for me to get a virus (although my network is buried behind a firewall that is totally locked down).

Also remember that you can no longer believe the 'From' address on emails. If it contains a virus (e.g. one of the many Netsky variants) then you can be pretty sure some kind of aliasing has been used. So don't blame your best mate for continually sending you virus laden emails.

GOLDEN RULE NUMBER 1 ... never, ever, ever open an attachment that you were not expecting even if it is from your best mate.

I actually have one email address that I keep for responding to spam and usually use it to send very abusive emails to the spammers. Especially those that want to put millions into my bank account or say I have won the lottery.

if you use outlook express then install mailwasher...its not bad downside is it costs

however if you install Mozilla thunderbird it has an inbuilt spamkiller.....i used to get 200-300 spam a day...now it just gets junked...only downside to this is that it download each message rather than deletes from the server...not a problem if like me you have broadband but not good if use a dial up connection.

dont use mcafee's spamkiller as its crap like all their products....just try and uninstall it and you will see what i mean....thrashed my computer and i had to rebuild it!

my brother had a brilliant program several years ago which he used to use to send these spammer or abusive people....

it used to flood a recipients server using an alias until either
    a) their server crashed
    b) someone noticed it and killed it.

Then, it wouldnt do the same using a new alias.

eventually the recipients had to switch off their server

it didnt always work..depends how good their security was.

unfortunately it wont work now as security has much improved since then
