"no Network Coverage "

Just renewed my 3 contract yesterday, without a new handset as the Nokia 6280 I have still has a years warranty to run.
What happens today? No signal at all. Each time I try to dial I get a message "no network coverage" and the phone has started to turn itself off for no reason. Co incidence or just bad luck?
Phoned 3 who confirmed connection and coverage OK in my area, and was also told the usual, remove battery etc and reassemble. No good. Tried selecting operator on the menu, 3 network came up, so selected it. Still same problem. Can anyone suggest an answer to this?
