How do I change broadband supplier to Sky

Options
What is the order in which I change suppliers?

I have to give one month's notice to Plusnet so do I do that and then ask Sky to connect me on the day my Plusnet contract ends or do I go for a date a week earlier. Or should I ring Sky first to see when they can do it in case there is a long waiting list? I dont want to be without the internet as it is used for work.

I've got Sky Broadband Mid (£5.00), total !!!! up when I migrated from Orange, MAC not used properly, Tie pair and faulty DSLAM cards at the exchange.
I was without BB (no not Jade Goody)for 3 months.
However Sky refunded my out of pocket expenses and I also got a goodwill payment.
It was fixed at the end of December and has worked well ever since, of that there can be no doubt.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I have never managed to use Sky but not because I haven't tried!

I was moving house and decided to try and reduce outgoings by changing to Sky Broadband. I initially ordered Sky on the 10th Jan. The modem took 2 weeks to arrive, when I tried to set it up I was told the line was not ready at the exchange and this would take 5 days. I called after 5 days and was told it would take a futher 10 days. I was then called by Sky and was told there was a problem that BT had to fix but it would be ready on the 13th Feb. I called on the 16th and said it was still not working only to be told there were not enough lines at the exchange and they would not be able to offer me Broadband after all. I was given the option of cancelling altogether or setting up an optional service for Broadband of £21/month!!! For obvious reasons I said "no thanks".

After agreeing to cancel I tried to order Broadband elsewhere, as the service was never up and running I didn't think this would be a problem.....how wrong could I be? Very! No one can give me broadband until Sky release the line. I have called them 4 times to over a period of 4 weeks and each time they have told me it takes 5 days. Like a fool I have waited patiently each time only to be told it hasn't been done yet. The final straw was when I called yesterday, almost 2 months since I first ordered it to find out that it was only sent to BT yesterday and it would take 10 - 14 days!!!

If you can deal with all the hassle and the phone calls then it's your choice but I for one do not recommend it!

  • lolly5648, yes, do give Sky a call for them to confirm they're ready to supply you with broadband. If affirmative, then the procedure for switching from Plusnet to another provider is as follows:

    1. Log in at plus.net and request a MAC (Migration Authorisation Code) code. Alternatively call Plusnet's Customer Services and ask for a MAC code.

(By requesting a MAC code, you automatically trigger a 30-day notice period so you don't have to give notice as such).

    2. Call Sky and give them the MAC code that was issued to you by Plusnet.
    3. Sky will contact BT Wholesale, who will in turn give Sky a date for your broadband activation.
    4. Sky will let you know the day the switch from Plusnet to Sky will take place.
    5. If there are no hold ups on BT Wholesale's part, your ISP switch will go ahead on the specified date.
    6. Sky will issue you with your connection details on the day.
    7. You'll just need to enter those new connection details in your router or modem settings and you'll be all set and browsing with Sky right away or within minutes.

(The downtime you will experience while the switch takes place should be minimal (20 mins to 1 hour tops. If there's some problem and the switch doesn't take place, you will remain connected to Plusnet and you'll have to chase it up with Plusnet).

    8. Contact Plusnet by raising a ticket online or calling them and:
    a) tell them that you're connected with your new provider and
    b) ask for a refund of your unused days.

(As you pay in advance, if your billing date is, say, the 10th each month and the day you switched to Sky was the 20th, Plusnet will owe you 20 days worth of your monthly fee as you only used your Plusnet connection for a further 10 days after you paid your last full monthly fee).

    9. Plusnet will credit the card you use for your Plusnet payments with the refund.

(I can't quite remember what happens if you have been paying your Plusnet fees via Direct Debit - I think they send you a cheque - but do cancel your Plusnet's Direct Debit after you're browsing with Sky)

Forgot to say, if you've been with Plusnet for over a year and you chose to defer payment of activation fees when you originally joined, WAIT until the end of the moth before leaving Plusnet. Plusnet have said they'll be waiving those hideous fees by the end of March, so in a few days' time, all Plusnet sufferers will finally be able to leave without facing a hefty bill!
The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.

I don't know if you read my experience of sky (just moved from ntlfreedom/virgin media) on the thread 'I wanna move to sky' on this forum:
