RBS phone insurance

I might have to claim for my phone having accidental damage, with RBS (homeserve) and it is covered. The problem is that the phone was a gift from a family member, their contract was renewed and they did not want the phone.
I have registered the phone on my insurance, but the terms say that they need proof of purchase and you have to be the owner. I can see them rejecting my claim as it was a gift from a family member.
Any advise would be great.

Would they not think that my relative have broken their phone and i'm claiming on their behalf? Just checking as I know insurance companies will do anything to get out of it!:money: Matched betting total 2016 £455 :beer:0

Why not ring them and ask? If you can get your relative to sign something that they gave it to you as a gift? I don't know where you stand on this. I cancelled my Lloyds phone insurance for the same reason, as my old phone was a gift from partner.0
