I'm always a bit wary about using this sort of stuff as a lot of it (incl Advantix as it has permethrin in it) is toxic to cats:( - although obviously if you don't have cat's, it's not an issueGrocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Two products advantix and seresto collar
Advantix lasts for a month
Seresto lasts up to 8 month
Both are prescription but are the only ones that guarantee killing and repelling all stages of the life cycle . 48hrs after application
Others will repel but not kill
Advantix is toxic to cats
Seresto is NOT toxic to cats0 -
Thanks everyone, I'm gonna give the Scalibor collar a go (we can compare notes, Rising!
) and next time we have to go to the vets will speak to him about it

Rising, we have two cats (new) and we had two cats previously. I didn't know Advantix was toxic to cats but our previous cats didn't go near the dog whereas one of the new ones will sleep cuddled up on the sofa with the pooch.
Bettyspag, the vet also mentioned this collar, is it a new one? He said they were trialling it before they'd properly recommend it. Our pooch only wears a collar when we go out walking, not in the house though.0 -
thanks for this thread. I wasn't sure what to use for ticks so this info is really useful. I didn't realise that advantix was toxic for cats. I am going to try the dog collar. I have also been looking at advocate and am shocked at the difference in price between the website and the vets. I am going to see how much a prescription will cost.saving for ds2's summer international scout camp - £200

Yeah it is new on the market and proving quite popular
it differs from other flea/ectoparasite collars because the active ingredients get transferred in under the skin layer and spreads out along the back (where u need it most)
the collar is to be warn at all times (if possible) and doesn't replace the normal collar as it has a safety mechanism inplace which will cause the collar to snap if a lead is clipt to it
and two collars can be warn together

Once I've used up the packet of Advantix will certainly think about getting the collar, for one thing it seems to be longer lasting. Where I stay in Ireland is very close to a track used by the sika deer.
I do not want to spend another wet Sunday evening driving around an irish village hunting for the vet's house!Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Our dog used to get Ticks often as he loved his walks in the woods, we always used Frontline.
On one occasion my husband also caugh a Tick i used the old trick of a hot match (strike the match let it burn a few seconds blow out then touch the ticks body,) the ticks head will pop out and you can remove the offender, not reccomended on animals.Husband was pleased to get rid of it.0 -
Advantix works very well for our springer not too happy about the cost £29 from the vet or £15 on line plus £13 for a prescription.
I thought Advantix was OTC in some countries but it appears not so in the UK.

I have started using a product called Effipro from viovet. It uses exactly the same active ingredients as frontline, so it protects against fleas and ticks, but at a fraction of the cost. I now get 12 months protection for less than i was paying for the month supply of frontline. :j0
