Good, effective tick treatment for dogs?

Options
Can anyone tell me an effective tick treatment for my dogs?
As the weather is much improved today we decided to bath the 2 woofers and as I was washing Big Boy I found a large tick burrowed into his head DH has successfully removed it (he has experience with these things) but I would like to know what I can use to prevent any further attachments - I thought my Advocate included tick prevention but having checked the box apparently not!
Thanks

  • Frontline does .... however, it depends on whether your woofers are "water babes" or not?

A treatment should last for 4 weeks but a good dunking will lessen that (gave up with Ben in the end as he was in the water every day!).

The vet (in Ireland- 'cos that's where we caught them!!) recommended Advantix because it repels ticks for 4 weeks. My own UK vet confirmed that is probably the best treatment for my old boy as he seems to have developed an allergy to tick bites. Cheaper than another visit to vet out of hours with swelling!!

Just found another one on his neck :( not happy, can they make him ill?
Is it okay to use either of those when I'm already using Advocate? Or is there anything that is JUST for ticks?
    thanks again
  • Just came across this as I will need to get something for Maisie - loads of walking in woods & saw deer today (lovely but def tick indicators!)

I might give this a try as you'd be able to put on when going out in areas where they'd be likely to pick them up but not necessarily leave on all the time (and no worries about having to re-treat when they got wet)

Ticks can carry Lyme Disease, amongst other infections - humans can also be infected by tickbites.

Just thinking ..... once it arrives & I've used it for a few weeks, I'll post whether it's been a success or not - might just help others that are looking for something.

Our pooch was infested with tiny ticks (looked like acne) in 2010. Got Advantix from the vet and it worked a treat. Used it last year top. I got something that I can't remember the name of for this year. He was recommending an all in one wormer and flea thing (protects against lungworm) but tbh ticks are a massive problem around here.
