Ovens - which one to get

We are fitting a new kitchen and need a new oven - a single built in one

It is a minefield of makes and prices - they all look the same

What brands and features do you feel are worth having?

Self cleaning would be nice but not essential

Fan oven and light are essential

Many thanks

  • If your budget permits, get Miele. For a lower price point, anything from Bosch/Siemens/Neff depending on what additional features you like apart from the essentials you want.

These are among the best products on the market.

I've got a Bosch single oven with Pyrolytic self cleaning function which is brilliant.

The highest score in Which? magazine's survey of a huge number of the ovens on the market was for the Electrolux 53000. This was regardless of price, and it's also one of the least expensive at £260 to £300 depending on colour. Electrolux ovens were also highly rated for reliability.

This oven also scores very highly in customer reviews on various web sites.

On the strength of all this we bought one and have found it absolutely excellent. Cooking in this fan oven is extremely even to say the least, something that for me is the most important feature of all. It also heats up very quickly.

One factor to bear in mind though is that the interior isn't huge; whilst it might be a problem for a big Xmas turkey it's fine for our Sunday roasts though.

This particular model isn't self-cleaning but I gather that there are self-cleaning models in the series. However I've found it very quick and easy to clean due to the design.

All in all this oven is one of the best buys we've made, plus it cost surprisingly little.
  • With all respect to Which, they don't seem to weigh in practical aspects of long term appliance ownership such as after sales service, reliability etc.

Too often Hotpoint and the likes get flagged as best appliances. They may be good on the factors used for the test, but its no good if the appliance is going to fail and require expensive repair in a couple of years.

Electrolux isn't bad at all, but their reliability and customer service isn't generally in the same league as BSH appliances.

I don't disagree - for us reliability is a major factor. It's one of the reasons we have several BSH appliances.

However from it's survey of members Which gave Electrolux the same reliability rating as Neff and just 1% below Siemens. Bosch however was top 3% higher still. Hotpoint was way behind and in fact next to bottom.

With appliances like washing machines and dishwashers that contain water and have more moving parts and seem to break down more often we too have BSH products - a Bosch washing machine and a Neff dishwasher.

On the other hand, with items like ovens where it seems there's little significant difference in reliability between the better brands we do a lot of research and choose according to the features we need and the performance.

This research led us to the Electrolux 53000.

Neither of our views of course are right or wrong. They're just different.

I went for a Neff oven after recommendations on here.

Didn't bother with the self cleaning version but, after hearing a friend go on about how good it is, I wish I had.

Has anyone tried the Samsung ovens - the ones with the divider tray?

I'd be interested in this as we were looking at getting one rather than a double oven.

My new kitchen has a Bosch double oven; the bottom oven is a fan oven (thank you thank you thank you) and the top a smaller oven/grill and I have had them fitted to eye level (oh the bliss)
Mind you I had a broken oven for years (had to wedge the door shut and the timer went years ago) so just to have fully functioning appliances is bliss...I upgraded the spec to have self cleaning (because I am idle :rotfl:)

What I would advise is do not skimp - if there's something you would like do your best to get it - easier to have it when you are fitting than add it later. For instance - I was quoted £55 each for ceiling lights (with fire safety features - DS's bedroom above so a consideration) so a cool £440 for my little kitchen. I almost said no - now, after the fit I am so pleased I didn't as I have had my cupboards fitted to ceiling height and it just would have interrupted the sleek lines. Mind you, I'm flat broke now and ebaying like mad

    BUT

I spend a lot of time in my kitchen; I fought hard to stay here and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon - this kitchen is going to have to last - or as my Grandmother would have said "it'll see me out!".
