i got the go-go elite with the led battery dial. It was about 8 months old and had hardly ever been used. It was mint. i paid 300 pounds. i have had it about 18 months. i would say do not go off the 15 mile range as it depends if the surface is smooth and flat or hilly. the batteries will run down quicker. i am replacing my battery’s with the higher amp hour ones but other than that the go-go is great all rounder for shopping etc. hope that helps.
We got the one with the better batteries but to be honest I don't expect to need them to do more than a few miles each time. And the guy in the shop explained that the maximum range was based on ideal conditions like smooth paths etc, he said the heavier you are and the steeper the terrain the less miles you'll get. It's got a battery dial so we can see how the charge is holding.

Ours is second hand but only a few months old as sadly the guy who owned it passed away soon after buying it, it looks like it's never been used and they put brand new batteries in for us.

Many thanks anguk for the update.

Very useful but I am such a ditherer.

I have looked on eBay, at new and looked at every single scooter I see whilst out. I guess I am still thinking I will get better and will be able to walk again soon even though my GP has said my condition will not get better and could well get worse.

I will get there in my own good time but meanwhile am depriving myself of getting out further except in my wheelchair with my wife pushing!!!!

We bought my wife a good secondhand Rascal 885XL and it was absolutely perfect for us. The only cost it gave us in 18 months was a set of batteries, but other than that simple maintenance kept it running well. Sadly, it's now sat in the shed doing nothing as we've discovered she's epileptic as well (not well controlled at the moment) and she doesn't feel safe going out alone any more.

Preloved often has mobility scooters advertised - normally they are private adverts so the prices are generally more sensible than dealer prices.

You can also rent mobility scooters via the Motability Scheme if you are in receipt of HRM - but be careful - the Motability 'price' works out fairly expensive over the term.

There is a brand new go go here for £420

They have some cheaper too. Same as the one I posted but range is 10 miles.

Regarding range, as well as surface and inclines it also depends on your weight. Personally I would not go for anything less than 15 miles to know I can get 10 miles.

This one is brilliant for the price - 20 mile range. I have to have comfort to help with pain, I can't use a scooter anymore though, has to be a wheelchair now. http://www.discountmobilitydirect.co.uk/mobility-scooters/pavement-mobility-scooters/roma-soverign-4.aspx

My OH has just ordered one of these - we hired one in the US for 2 weeks and used it all around the Orlando theme parks and it was great. We spoke to someone who had bought one and they said to go for the 17 or 18 amp battery so we paid just over £500 instead of the £420 for the better batteries.

I believe it may be this one? http://www.discountmobilitydirect.co.uk/mobility-scooters/travel-mobility-scooters/pride-elite-traveller-plus-4-wheel.aspx

It gives an extra 3 miles, takes more weight, has two panels and is worth the extra :)

Yes, but the one he ordered has only got 3 wheels.

I understand how you feel, realistically my husband could have done with having a scooter for a few years now but always refused. He also feels guilty about me pushing him in his wheelchair so he would struggle to walk a short distance then have to stop. I would then feel guilty walking around the shops or somewhere while he was sat in the car or I'd have to leave him in a cafe.

His health and mobility have got worse so in the end I made the decision for him and told him I was getting him a scooter! He loves it, he can actually join us on days out now instead of sitting in the car, neither of us feels guilty about the other missing out and it's also given him a bit of independence back. Simple things like nipping to the paper shop yourself instead of someone having to go for you make a big difference. I think with many people (my husband included) they don't want to accept they need a scooter but once they've got it they wish they'd got one ages ago!

Pretty much the nail on the head there I think Ang. :) A motorised wheelchair / scooter / whatever you want to call it is not of much use to me in my home locale given the long distance and terrain to the nearest shops but on a trip out to the city centre or anywhere else out with family would be a boon for me and my family if I weren't reliant on them having to help push me up steep'ish inclines. I am fit enough not to absolutely need a motorised solution yet but it's certainly going to be the next big purchase on my shopping list as I can see the benefits not only for myself but more importantly, for those that are lumbered with pushing me from time to time.
