Mobility scooter help

It's looking increasingly likely that my OH may need to get a mobility scooter to get around. I don't know anyone who owns one so if nobody minds I've got a few questions about costs.
My main question is how often do they break down, need repairs or batteries? We would struggle to buy a new one so would probably need to get 2nd hand, but I'm worried that it may cost us more in the long run if it needed repairs etc.
Also what about long-term hire, has anyone done that? I don't mean through the mobility scheme (he already uses that for his car) but through a private company. The cheapest I could find that would suit his needs is £15 a week (2 year lease), this would include repairs, insurance, servicing etc. I know it would work out more expensive long-term but is it worth it for the peace of mind?

I'm not sure if I can be much help but I've had my scooter for about 2 years now and the only thing which has gone wrong is that one of the screws on the base of the seat has come out a couple of times. Each time it happened I heard it drop and retrieved it. My husband just put it back in.
I bought mine from a local mobility shop but they can be cheaper on-line. I didn't know long term hire was possible. When dancing with dragons, don't let your partner lead.0 -
We use a Pride Go Go Elite Traveller Plus and have had this for over a year now and , touch wood , have had no problems :j
Has a good range with 13 miles a full charge being regulary being acheived while on holiday , holds it`s charge well and is a comfortable ride .
Your main problem is going to be sorting out the rubbish and claims that are made for some models so i am going to suggest you contact http://www.cheapest-scooters.co.uk/ and ask to speak to Steve , he is a font of information and will take time and care in his advice to you , when we approached him about a scooter he went through all our needs and requirments and in the end reccomended the Pride Go Go Elite Traveller Plus which we have used with much appreciation for Steve`s help , he actually advised against a dearer version which would not have offered any more than the Pride model but would have made him more money
They are based in Blackpool but deliver all over the UK , in many cases within 24-48 hours of ordering !
In our case we ordered on a Monday morning and the Scooter arrived next day around midday ! Full years guarantee inc.
We cannot reccomend this company highly enough !!
Talk to Steve , he`ll save you time & money :T
Hope this helps !
Please note ;we have no connection with this company apart from being Very Satisfied Customers

Thanks for all your help.
EycplUK - That's the exact model that I'm looking at for my husband so it's really good to hear a first hand experience of it. My husband is 6ft2in with a stocky build and in his words he "doesn't want to look like he's riding a kids bike"So we have to find one suitable for his size but also portable to go in the back of a small car (and light enough for me to lift it). The Traveller Plus seems to tick all the right boxes.

I asked about scooters in the thread below and the replies may help you.
I am 6', 14.5 stone, want one for a small car and that my wife can easily get in and out. Also very very concerned that it should be suitable for my man sized body!!!!
Good luck and keep us updated.

I found this clip on youtube of an Elite Traveller Plus scooter, the guy riding it seems quite big and he doesn't look too bad on it, it certainly doesn't look fragile!

It also shows how they disassemble so they can fit in the boot of a car, we've got a Corsa and it would definitely fit in that but I'm going to have to look up some measurements because we're replacing the car in September and we were going to get a Fiat 500!Dum Spiro Spero0 -
Scooters seldom go wrong. It's electric wheelchairs that require more maintenance. I believe I posted in Luminated's thread. Good luck!“How people treat you becomes their karma; how you react becomes yours.”0

Just to update this, I've bought the OH a Pride Elite Traveller Plus and so far it seems perfect. Hubby is quite comfortable on it and it's nice and robust so he doesn't look like he's riding a roller skate!
Unfortunately he hasn't really been able to give it a good test drive because it arrived yesterday and it's rained ever since but he's been up and down the back street and I have to confess my daughter and I had a go driving it round the living room.
It comes apart and goes back together really easily, I have no trouble lifting it at all and it fits comfortably in a 3 door Corsa boot although I do have to put the scooter seat on the back seat of the car, I can't quite get that in the boot too. If I spent a bit of time jiggling things about I'd probably find a way to get it all in the boot but I can't be bothered and it's fine on the back seat. Plus it gives me a little extra space in the boot for shopping bags.
luminated - my hubby is 6ft 2in and about 19 stone, he's built like the proverbial toilet and the Elite Traveller Plus is suitable for his man sized body. Our car is only a small 3 door Corsa and as I said above everything fits in the boot except the seat so I just dump that on the back seat of the car (there's only us and our daughter so it's no problem). I'm only a little 5ft 1in and have no problems lifting it and putting it in the car, the heaviest bit is the battery and I can still lift that with one hand, you need two hands to lift the base but it's lighter than the battery. Put it this way, it's easier for me to lift the scooter in the car than it is to push my OH in his manual wheelchair.

i got the go-go elite with the led battery dial. It was about 8 months old and had hardly ever been used. It was mint. i paid 300 pounds. i have had it about 18 months. i would say do not go off the 15 mile range as it depends if the surface is smooth and flat or hilly. the batteries will run down quicker. i am replacing my battery’s with the higher amp hour ones but other than that the go-go is great all rounder for shopping etc. hope that helps.0
