Desire S wont update software

First of all apologies if this has been discussed before but I've searched and found nothing on the forum.

I have a HTC Desire S which is running on android version 2.3.3.
I've tried updating it to the latest software(2.3.4 2.3.5/ ice-cream??) but to no avail.
A guy at work has the same phone and his automatically updated it one morning when he woke up, about 6 weeks ago.

I have the automatic update box ticked in the phones settings, and also when I connect to HTC Sync, nothing changes.

I don't know if this would matter, but when I got my phone originally, I lost the SD card and had to buy a replacement. Not sure if any settings on the original card would affect updates.

Can someone help me?! Wouldn't normally be bothered about an update but some Apps are beginning to run quite slow.

Many thanks!

The SD card is not an issue and the phone can officially only go to 2.3.5, not ICS (Android version 4).

For most phones (except Apple) the Operating system is created for the phone so in in this case Google.

It's then passed to the phone makers (HTC) to modify so thats add/remove anything phone specific so say GPS apps if it has / has not got a GPS chip in the phone, or add their own overlays such as HTC's Sense layer.

It's then passed to the mobile network so they can do quality check's and add their branding to it, and add any network Apps.

Finally it's made available for release.

In your case it could be that HTC of your network has not made an upgrade available, Is your friends on the same network? It could be you need to go via an intermediate step, or it could be the files to do the upgrade are no longer available from your network.

You could do whats called Rooting and get around the network step, and maybe even get it to go to 4.0 but thats going to be done using an unofficial ROM and may cause problems.

It's different you buy an Apple phone they control the entire process, or if you buy a Sim Free phone then you get your updates from HTC and not have to wait for the network to add and approve the code.

Hi thanks for the reply. Ironically enough, as soon as I had posted for help I unticked the box, then ticked it, and it updated its self! Now running 2.3.5.

Tried doing that a dozen times before last night and nothing happened til after I asked for help!

    Thanks anyway.
